Bali climate talks: press briefing

On 3-14 December, the thirteenth annual negotiating conference for members of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change will take place in Bali, Indonesia. The Government must abandon airport expansion plans ? including a third runway at Heathrow airport - if it is serious about tackling climate change, Friends of the Earth said today. Gordon Brown?s pledge to make Britain a world leader in tackling climate change has been welcomed today by Friends of the Earth. But the environmental campaign group said his words must now be matched by urgent action to cut UK carbon dioxide emissions, which have risen since Labour came to power. This must include a comprehensive review of all Government policies and strengthening its proposals for a new law to cut UK carbon dioxide emissions, which is due to be discussed by Parliament next week.

MEPs FAIL TO BACK TOUGH ACTION ON AVIATION AND CLIMATE CHANGE

EU plans to tackle aviation?s increasing climate change impacts through the Emissions Trading Scheme remain inadequate after MEPs failed to significantly strengthen European Commission proposals in Strasbourg earlier today (13 November. Aviation is the fastest growing source of carbon dioxide in Europe, and failure to cut it will seriously jeopardise EU plans to cut European emissions by 30 per cent by 2020.
