GOVERNMENT MUST INTRODUCE A WINDFALL TAX ON SHELL PROFITS
http://www.foe.co.uk/resource/press_releases/government_must_introduce_3101 2008.html
The Government must introduce a windfall tax on huge oil company profits and use the money to fund a comprehensive programme to improve the energy efficiency of people?s homes, and scale up investment in alternative energy sources, such as renewables, Friends of the Earth said today. Earlier today Shell announced profits of 27.6 billion US dollars (£13.9 billion) in 2007 - a record for a UK company.

MAJOR BOOST IN UK RENEWABLES NEEDED TO MEET EU TARGET
http://www.foe.co.uk/resource/press_releases/major_boost_in_uk_renewabl_230 12008.html
The UK Government must give a massive boost to its support for renewable power if Britain is to play its part in tackling climate change and meet EU targets for green energy, Friends of the Earth warned today. Despite having one of the best potentials for wind, wave and tidal power in Europe, Britain sits near the bottom of the EU renewable energy league table.

EU MUST STRENGTHEN CLIMATE ACTION PLAN
http://www.foe.co.uk/resource/press_releases/eu_must_strengthen_climate_220 12008.html
The EU must strengthen its proposals for cutting European carbon dioxide emissions, and abandon plans for a massive expansion in biofuels, if its ambitions to lead globally on climate change are credible, warns Friends of the Earth. The EU Energy Directive, which is due to be published on Wednesday (23 January), will allocate targets to each member state for cutting emissions and generating energy from renewable.

http://www.foe.co.uk/resource/press_releases/more_roadbuilding_would_be_140 12008.html

http://www.foe.co.uk/resource/press_releases/green_solutions_undermined_100 12008.html

Nuclear power is not the answer
http://www.foe.co.uk/resource/press_releases/nuclear_power_is_not_the_a_090 12008.html
Building a new generation of nuclear power stations is not the answer to the UK?s energy problems and will do little to help tackle climate change, Friends of the Earth warned today. The environmental campaign group said that the Government?s focus on nuclear power is a distraction from developing real and sustainable solutions, such as a major programme of renewables and energy efficiency, and more efficient use of fossil fuels, including combined heat and Power (CHP). The Government is expected to give the go-ahead to a new generation of nuclear plants tomorrow (Thursday).

Council Votes In Favour Of New Coal Fired Power Station
http://www.foe.co.uk/resource/press_releases/council_votes_in_favour_of_030 12008.html
It is very disappointing that Medway Council has given its backing to an outdated and dirty coal fired power station. If built, Kingsnorth power station will undermine the Governments commitment to meet European targets for producing twenty percent of energy from renewables by 2020. If it is serious about tackling climate change the Government must throw out this proposal and promote investment in clean and green alternatives.?
