Review of biofuels welcome, but RTFO must be put on hold

Friends of the Earth welcomed the DfT?s review of the environmental impact of biofuels, but warned that the Renewable Transport Fuels Obligation (RTFO) ? due to come into force on April 15th ? should be put on hold. The RTFO will require all petrol sold in the UK to contain a percentage of biofuels in order to meet EU targets to increase the use of alternative fuels for road transport.

Friends of the Earth has urged caution following today?s Government challenge to the voluntary carbon offsetting industry by Environment Secretary Hilary Benn. The environmental campaigning group argues that the introduction of a landmark Government Code of Best Practice for consumer offsetting products will be of limited benefit to the environment. Even if the Code helps consumers make the most ethical choices when it comes to offsetting their carbon, it could be counter-productive by giving people the illusion that any amount of energy consumption is fine as long as they buy offsets.

Government announces annual targets for carbon reduction

Hilary Benn, Secretary of State for the Environment announced today that the Government would set an annual target range for emissions reductions. He also said the Climate Change Committee would be asked to consider whether the 2050 target should be tightened up to 80 per cent.

The Prince of Wales? speech on climate change today to the European Parliament has been warmly welcomed by Friends of the Earth. The environmental campaign group congratulated the Prince for highlighting the scale of the climate challenge that the world faces, his call for urgent action ? comparable with going on a war-footing ? and his recognition that government action to develop a low-carbon economic and political framework is essential if the world is to successfully combat the threat. His call for countries to be paid to protect forests ? ?this vital global utility? ? was also welcomed.

A new study, released today, shows that proposed binding minimum EU recycling targets of 50% for municipal waste by 2020 could save emissions equivalent to more than 89 million tonnes of CO2 per year. This is the equivalent to taking 31 million cars off the road.

The Chancellor must resist calls to scrap plans for a 2p rise in fuel duty, Friends of the earth said today.
