FALL IN UK CARBON DIOXIDE EMISSIONS WELCOMED

Provisonal figures showing a fall in UK carbon dioxide emissions have been welcomed by Friends of the Earth. But the environmental campaign group called for tougher Government action on climate change pointing out that carbon dioxide emissions are still only one per cent below 1997 levels ? despite repeated promises of substantial cuts - and that today?s figures exclude emissions from shipping and aviation.

High Court orders Government to release Sakhalin information

Tuesday 18 March ? The High Court has ruled that a Government department must hand over information to Friends of the Earth about a controversial oil and gas project. Friends of the Earth requested the information under freedom of information laws when the Export Credits Guarantee Department (ECGD) was considering financing oil and gas exploration off the north-east coast of Sakhalin, a Russian island north of Japan.

The Chancellor has fallen a long way short of his promise to put sustainability at the heart of today?s Budget, Friends of the Earth said today. Alistair Darling should have used his speech to announce a wide range of positive measures that would have helped develop a low carbon economy by making it cheaper and easier for people to go green. But despite a few welcome green initiatives, it fell a long way short of what is required.

The Chancellor must put tackling climate change at the heart of tomorrow?s Budget Friends of the Earth said today. In December the Chancellor promised that "sustainability will be at the heart of the next Budget. This is not an optional extra. It is essential for all our futures." The environmental group is calling on the Chancellor to keep this pledge by announcing a comprehensive package of measures to make it cheaper and easier for people to go green, and to stick to his plans to increase fuel duty.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) today advised stakeholders that illegal GM rice from China is currently in the UK food chain. Friends of the Earth and GM Freeze have urged the FSA to act immediately to ensure that contaminated products are cleared from shelves and prevented from entering the market, instead of waiting a month until the official date to implement measures.

The Government must massively expand its efforts to increase levels of energy efficiency in the homes of the fuel poor, Friends of the Earth said today. The green group warned that Government efforts to boost the income or lower the bills of the fuel poor would neither provide a permanent solution to fuel poverty in the face of rising energy costs or tackle climate change.

A new survey published today showing that nearly one third of new home-buyers plan to carry out some of the energy saving recommendations in their Home Information Packs (HIPs), has been welcomed by Friends of the Earth. But the environmental organisation warned that without greater financial incentives homeowners are much less likely to turn their intentions into action, and called on the Government to regulate to ensure that EPCs are provided to all prospective buyers when a property is first put on the market.
