Taiwan Carbon Technology
http://www.army-technology.com/contractors/nbc/taiwan_carbon
Activated carbons were traditionally in the form of powder or granule. It was not until the last few decades when the third form, Activated Carbon Fibre / Fabric (ACF), was successively developed.

ACF has been widely used in the industries of chemistry, pharmacy and environmental protection for adsorbing toxic molecules. Its performance is particularly effective in shielding the attack of toxic chemical agents, making it ideal for Nuclear, Biological and Chemical (NBC) protective clothing and filters.

IMPROVED NBC PROTECTION OVER POWDER AND GRANULE COATING

Thanks to the characteristic of reduced diffusion resistance during the process of adsorption and desorption, ACF has much greater capacity and higher speed in performing adsorption and desorption than powders and granules. Another advantage of ACF is its easy-forming property that can be fabricated into cloth, felt and paper to meet different demands in application. This new and advanced material is the answer to demands for improved military and industrial NBC protection.

The ACF made by Taiwan Carbon Technology is a high performance activated carbon existing in the form of woven fibres, not the impregnated into cloth and / or coated with granular activated carbon. It is made of PAN (Polyacrylonitrile) fibre, heat-treated in the process of carbonization and activation, resulting in a much more powerful capacity and efficiency in adsorption than any of the existing powdered and granular activated carbons.

ACTIVATED CARBON FIBRE (ACF) FABRIC FOR NBC SUITS

ACF, in fabric, outperforms Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) and Powdered Activated Carbon (PAC) in the respect of formation. With the help of corrugation and sewing technology, it can be made into whatever forms to meet any unique requirement in applications.

ACF effectively removes aliphatic, hydrocarbons, halogenated, aromatic, aldehydes, ketoses, acids, alcohols, phosphorus compounds, ethers, esters, sulphur and nitrogen compounds. ACF also removes hydrogen sulphide, sulphur dioxide, chloride and formaldehyde.

LIGHTER, MORE EFFICIENT, NBC FILTER MATERIAL

Being in the form of fabric, the ACF still maintains 100% of activated carbon and, in addition to the advantages of even distribution of micropores and high value of surface areas, it has much greater dynamic adsorption capacity and adsorption rate as well as smaller critical bed depth than that of GAC. ACF is a lighter, more efficient, more convenient and less bulky material when used for NBC filter systems. Through the process of impregnation, ACF can also be equipped with added catalytic, chemisorbic and bactericidal properties.

ACF has long been proved as having outstanding performance in adsorbing odours, solvents, bacteria, virus and all of the contaminants that exist in air, gas, water and other liquids.

ADAVANTAGES OF ACTIVATED CARBON FIBRE (ACF) OVER GRANULAR ACTIVATED CARBON (GAC)

The advantages of ACF include huge adsorption volume, heat-resistance, acid-proof and base-proof. ACF's capacity for adsorption of organic vapours, such as gasoline, aldehydes, alcohols and phenol, is seven to ten times that of GAC. It also has significant capability in adsorbing inorganic gas (e.g. NO, NO2, SO2, H2S, HF, HCl etc.) as well as substances in water solution (e.g. dyes, COD, BOD, oils, metal ions, precious metal ions). It also exhibits outstanding ability in the adsorption of bacteria.

A bed of 3mm to 4mm thickness of ACF can have similar adsorption performance as a bed of 20mm to100mm thickness of GAC. ACF does not only perform remarkably for high concentration substances but also for low concentration. For instance, ACF adsorbs toluene when the gas concentration is diminished to 100ppm, whereas GAC starts to adsorb only when the concentration is more than 100ppm. Furthermore, ACF performs normal adsorption even if the concentration of phenol in wastewater is lowed down to 5ppm to10ppm, which is not achievable by other adsorption materials.

SNIFFEX® is a pocket-sized, hand-held device for the detection of a wide variety of explosives based on its ability to detect the presence of nitro-oxide ions (free radicals) within its effective range.

Most existing and emerging detection systems are typically too expensive and locate explosives only within a few inches of the explosive. Other existing products need to be close enough to inhale air around the explosive.

SNIFFEX® uses a totally different approach. It uses the interference between the magnetic field of the earth, the explosive, and the device itself, allowing the device to penetrate and locate even small amounts of explosives through concrete and metal barriers. Unlike other devices SNIFFEX® can locate and find explosives from 10ft-300ft, even when the explosive is hidden in buildings or in vehicles.

We also supply a range of various other law-enforcement products.

MKU Forays into Hi-Tech Defence Equipment Market with Armored Vehicles and UAVs
http://www.army-technology.com/contractors/personal/m_kumar/press2.html
On the Indian subcontinent today the only visibly bullet-proof cars for VIPs are the white Ambassadors or the armored Maruti Gypsy meant for the armed security personnel in Jammu, Kashmir or other flashpoints. With a constant rise in threats to the safety of defense and security personnel as well as political figures, the right kind of protection at all times and locations is paramount.

MKU, whose products range from ballistic protection and bomb blankets to UAVS is unveiling its first safe, reliable and light-weight armored vehicle range. Christened Concord C7, it has been developed and manufactured by Concord Safety Solutions - a joint venture between three industry stalwarts - MKU, MDT Armor of Israel, and the JN Group. The vehicle draws upon the vast collective expertise, experience and capabilities of its promoters.

The Concord range of armored vehicles offer varying levels of ballistic protection against all types of threat and can be completely custom-designed. These armored vehicles have been tested in real conditions and have successfully withstood various levels of perceivable threats. MKU's facilities, products and processes conform to the most stringent quality standards, while the R&D division conforms to the standards in the US and Europe.

The armored vehicles are designed to be inconspicuous and can easily and completely merge with traffic. The vehicle has been tested to survive an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) - in one test a bomb containing 2.5 to 3 kg of explosive material was detonated three meters from the vehicle's flank and although this resulted in 111 holes on the body panel, no penetration occured and the 'passengers' remained unscathed.

When it comes to enhancing the protection of armored vehicles required for VIP security, transportation and cash transit without compromising on their maneuverability and performance, Concord light-armor solution has become widely popular worldwide. The panels which are manufactured and installed to provide the protection shield use various composite materials such as aramid, polyethylene and ceramic, either in combination or alone.

UNMANNED AERIAL VEHICLE SYSTEM (UAVS)

Ever heard of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle carrying a tonne of payload? Or one that can take-off and land like a helicopter or Harrier jump-jet? MKU, which has become one of the pioneers in the country to indigenously develop and produce Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Systems (UAVs), is in the process of developing such UAVS. MKU's UAVS are designed around two basic philosophies: the UAVS must utilize cutting-edge technologies to provide the client with state-of-the-art capabilities, and they must operate autonomously and provide an easy to use intuitive interface so that the operator can focus on the mission at hand.

The company's first two UAVs, TERP (Tactical Electrical Reconnaissance Probe) and ERASMUS were launched in 2007. These UAVs can achieve a maximum altitude of up to 19,500 feet, and be used for a range of applications like border control, remote surveillance and reconnaissance, disaster management, search and rescue, road patrol, convoy protection and survey and mapping.

FUTURE UAV PRODUCTS

The company is already commited to developing the next generation UAVS, including the Omnius Series of Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) UAVs for both medium and high altitude, and the SKYLIFTER series of Cargo UAVS with the capability to carry one ton and more of cargo MKU's UAV division currently has an R&D and Production Centre in Bangalore. The company is currently in the process of setting up an integrated R&D, Production and Flight Testing Facility on the outskirts of Bangalore.

ETEC
http://www.army-technology.com/contractors/ballistic_protection/etec
In the field of body armour, ETEC has developed ceramic components for compound systems consisting of ceramics and polymers. These high-quality protection systems consist of a ceramic tile glued by a high-performance adhesive to a polyaramide or GFK backing. The area weight is less than half of armour steel yet provides an identical protection effect.

PERSONAL AND ASSET BALLISTIC-PROTECTION

ETEC ceramics are applied in many personal and asset ballistic-protection products. ALOTEC® (alumina) and SICADUR® (silicon carbide) materials are our most popular ceramics: UN and NATO peacekeeping forces' military vehicles are protected from direct fire, artillery, mortar splinters and mines by means of our add-on ceramic-based armour systems..

VEHICULAR MODULAR-ARMOUR PLATES

The vehicles of the German IFOR troops in Bosnia are amongst those also equipped with a modular protection concept system, protecting them by means of add-on armour plates which are screwed onto the car body.

CERAMIC COMPONENTS FOR PERSONAL EQUIPMENT AND IN-VEHICLE BALLISTIC PROTECTION

Ceramic materials are brittle and thus susceptible to impacts, meaning ceramics alone have only a low ballistic-protection effect. In composite systems (for example, combined ceramic / polymer armour) for body armour and vehicle protection, however, ceramics materials have succeeded in replacing steel plates, reducing overall weight by up to 50%.

There is a different mechanism underlying the protective effect of ceramic composite armour. When striking the ceramic surface, the projectile tip is deformed, causing an extension of the cross section. When subsequently penetrating the ceramics, the projectile is micronised. Due to their lower mass, the kinetic energy of the fragments is considerably lower, and therefore completely absorbed within the backing by elastic-plastic deformation.

These composite systems make use of the following properties of high-performance ceramics:

High hardness

High tensile-strength

High modulus of elasticity

High sonic speed

Low areal weight

Due to their excellent cost / performance ratio, ALOTEC® SB high-tech alumina ceramic components for armour have been our most successful product thus far.

CERAMIC COMPONENTS OF BALLISTIC-PROTECTION FOR PERSONNEL

As a manufacturer of high-performance ceramics, ETEC cooperates with many system suppliers in order to increase personal ballistic-protection efficiency, save weight and improve the user's comfort. Conventional ballistic-protection vests do not provide complete protection: only ceramic-based inserts are able to comply reliably with the requirements of superior protection levels.

MONOLITHIC CERAMIC PLATES FOR BULLET-PROOF VESTS

Nowadays bullet-proof vests are mostly equipped with monolithic ceramic plates. Due to their double or multiple curvature they adapt themselves to body shape, increasing the wearer's comfort. Owing to advanced and flexible manufacturing technology, it is possible to produce a broad range of plates according to customer specifications.

In addition to monolithic inserts, ETEC can also provide multi-tile versions based on small single ceramic tiles (e.g. 50mm x 50mm). In cases of impact, these inserts have proven to have an increased multi-hit capability because the size of the damaged area produced in the armour system is controlled and minimised.

MILITARY-VEHICLE ARMOUR CERAMICS

Composite armour systems based on high-performance ceramics have proven their efficiency for the protection of light and middle-weight military vehicles, both as add-on armour and integrated interior protection.

They protect against direct gun fire, mortar, artillery splinters and blast mines. Our customers can develop specific protection systems depending on the threat level, such as ALOTEC / polymer composite solutions (which are replacing traditional steel armour systems).

ETEC: ISO 9001-CERTIFIED

Ceramic composite armour systems (which are between 30% and 50% lighter than most other armour materials) comply with the strictest international-standard requirements to provide reliable protection.

Our high-performance ceramics for armour systems have enabled us to set standards of extremely tight tolerances, thus guaranteeing the highest ballistic-protection levels.

Well-trained specialists and technicians work with ETEC, and our production plant is equipped with the latest machines and equipment (including CAD engineering, quality-assurance equipment and high-tech production machinery). In this way, it is possible to ensure the production of high-quality and profitable products, even with extremely tight tolerances.

The highly sophisticated quality-assurance system ? certified according to ISO 9001 ? guarantees production of a continuously high quality, thus enabling ETEC to meet the high requirements of international safety engineering standards.

Owing to their use, extremely high manufacturing standards are required for ballistic-protective ceramics. Our production process provides:

Careful selection of raw materials

Controlled and reproducible preparation of raw materials

Process control of shaping and sinter technologies

Certified quality-management system

LIMAWS(R) Lightweight Mobile Artillery Weapon System - Rocket
http://www.army-technology.com/projects/limaws/
The LIMAWS(R) (Lightweight Mobile Artillery Weapon System ‐ Rocket) will provide the Royal Artillery's fire support to the British Army's light and rapid reaction forces. Fire support to heavy forces is provided by heavier systems such as the 25t Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS).

"The LIMAWS's ease of portability means it can access difficult forward areas very quickly."

At approximately 9t the LIMAWS(R) is light enough for two systems to be carried by a C-130J Hercules transport aircraft or one system carried underslung from a CH-47 Chinook helicopter. It has the power to launch precision GPS-guided rockets to a range of more than 60km.

LIMAWS(R) can be driven over a range of 500km. The system's portability means it can access difficult forward areas very quickly to provide high-volume precision fire support to ground forces.

LIMAWS(R) consists of a six-wheeled four-wheel drive Supacat vehicle and a Lockheed Martin self-loading launcher.

LIMAWS(R) PROGRAMME

The LIMAWS programme was launched for two separate indirect fire systems, the LIMAWS Gun (LIMAWS-G) and the LIMAWS Rocket (LIMAWS(R)). The LIMAWS-G programme to provide close and deep-fire support for light and medium forces was cancelled in September 2007.

In 2000, the MoD procurement agency issued Invitations To Tender (ITTs) for the risk-reduction phase of LIMAWS(R) to Lockheed Martin (USA), LFK (Germany) and to four UK companies ‐ Alenia Marconi Systems; BAE Systems, Hunting Engineering and Matra BAe Dynamics.

In 2001, contracts for two separate 11-month risk-reduction and simulation contracts for a conceptual study of lightweight rocket launchers were awarded to BAE Systems and Hunting Engineering. Hunting Engineering became INSYS Ltd in 2001 and part of the Lockheed Martin UK group in 2005. The studies included mobility, portability and stability in action.

ASSESSMENT AND TRIALS

In 2002 the UK MoD selected INSYS for the assessment phase contract for the LIMAWS(R) which was completed in 2005. The Assessment Phase included the design, build and trial of a systems demonstrator and a series of technology demonstration trials including testing with the Royal Marines Amphibious trials unit.

The trials included live firing trials, mobility across country, fording and air transportability and compatibility with the Chinook and Hercules. The firing trials were carried out at the QinetiQ Royal Artillery (Hebrides) missile range.

"TheLIMAWS(R) will provide the Royal Artillery's fire support to the British Army's light and rapid reaction forces."

A date for MoD main gate approval has not been announced but is expected in 2008. It is anticipated that a demonstration and production contract to include four pre-production systems will be awarded to Lockheed Martin UK after main gate approval and that LIMAWS(R) will enter service in 2010 or 2011. The requirement is for 24 units.

LIMAWS(R) VEHICLE

The chassis selected for the LIMAWS(R) is a 6x4 Supacat chassis. Supacat builds 6x6 and 4x4 vehicles under license from HMT Vehicles Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Lockheed Martin.

The LIMAWS(R) 6x4 chassis design is a modified and lightened version of the 6x6 chassis and levers technology from the HMT designs. The four-wheel drive is on the first two axles. The 6x4 chassis provides significant weight saving compared to a 6x6 chassis but reduced cross country mobility.

The vehicle is designed and built with four lifting points so it can be carried underslung by a Chinook CH-47 helicopter. The total vehicle weight, including a 2.3t rocket pod, is approximately 9t.

The cab is air conditioned, fitted with a CAFU (Chemical Air Filtration Unit) system and accommodates three crew and their battlefield kit. The cab is fitted with armoured glazing and internal flash blinds, which are lowered before firing. The vehicle has fixing mounts for appliqué armour.

The vehicle is fitted with a four-cylinder diesel engine supplied by Cummins and has automatic transmission.

WEAPON SYSTEM

LIMAWS(R) is fitted with a computerised fire control system supplied by Lockheed Martin Missile and Fire Control Systems and which is of proven design and is also installed on HIMARS vehicles and on the tracked version of MLRS.

LIMAWS(R) is fitted with a new lightweight launcher. The launcher is pivoted at the rear of the vehicle chassis. The elevation system is hydraulically powered. There is no traverse turntable as in MLRS but the boom reloading system is of similar design.

In a typical firing mission, the target data is transmitted to LIMAWS(R) from a battlefield command post.

MUNITIONS

The LIMAWS(R) vehicles will each carry six rockets. These can be fitted with different warheads depending on the target.

"A date for MoD main gate approval has not been announced but is expected in 2008."

The weapon will fire Lockheed Martin GPS-guided GMLRS rounds which are already in service on the MLRS systems deployed by the Royal Artillery. The GPS-guided GMLRS rounds are manufactured by Lockheed Martin, MBDA (UK), Diehl (Germany) and FiatAvio (Italy). The GMLRS rocket is equipped with an inertial guidance and global positioning system and is fitted with small canards on the rocket nose.

LIMAWS (R) is also capable of firing the long-range guided missile Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) which has not been purchased by the UK. The ATACMS family of missiles includes the block 1, block 1A and block 1A Unitary missiles.

Constellation Introduce Explonix - a State-of-the-Art Portable Explosive Detection Device
http://www.army-technology.com/contractors/personal/constellation/press1.html
World leading suppliers of Counter Improvised Explosive Device (CIED) equipment, Constellation International, recently introduced the latest innovation in their range of portable explosive detection products - Explonix.

In today's global climate, the need for a reliable and effective means to detect explosive devices or components is crucial. Traditionally, conventional explosive detection technology has relied upon instruments which identify signature vapours given off by unstable explosives compounds as they evaporate. However, this method of detection is not 100% accurate, and with the rise of global terrorism, explosive devices are evolving to become increasingly harder to detect.

The Explonix is a portable, user friendly detection device that can employ two methods of detection: not only can it identify explosive vapours in a conventional manner to identify bulk quantities of explosive materials, but it can also identify particulate traces - microscopic particles of solid explosive material which adhere to any surface the explosive has come in contact with.

Whilst a competently made explosive device can be designed to mask vapour traces, even the most skilled bomb maker cannot completely eradicate traces of explosive particulate from a handled device - making Explonix a reliable detection solution even in situations where more conventional detectors may fail. In addition, Explonix's particulate detection enables effective identification of anything or anyone that might have come into contact with explosive material, making it ideal for investigation and analysis as well as direct detection.

The Explonix can be used to identify a wide and varied range of explosive materials, from conventional military plastic explosives to home made compounds.

Features include:

Rapid hand-held detection, identification and location of contraband explosives Easy checking of passengers and baggage True Continuous Vapor Mode screening for fast localization and identification of explosive traces Easy integration with other security technologies (X-Ray scanners, bomb-squad robots) Sensitive identification of 'post-explosion residues'

http://www.army-technology.com/contractors/navigation/rajant/press6.html
Rajant Corporation, a leading provider of wireless mining solutions, announced today that it has entered into a reseller agreement with Utah-based Wheeler Machinery Co. (Wheeler) to distribute and support its BreadCrumb wireless mesh communications product line.

"We are very excited to partner with a member of the Caterpillar dealer network. We believe this agreement will offer Rajant the opportunity to reach many new mining and construction customers while providing Wheeler's world-class support," said Gary Anderson, Senior Vice President of Mining for Rajant. "Wheeler is an institution built from a history of experience, product knowledge, and an intense desire to serve its customers. It is obvious that customer satisfaction is the most important aspect of their business philosophy."

In business more than fifty-seven years and headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah, Wheeler has thirteen regional branch offices serving all of Utah and regions of Arizona, Nevada and Wyoming. As a member of the exclusive Caterpillar worldwide dealer network, Wheeler will be a key partner in the sales, delivery, installation, training and support of Rajant BreadCrumb networks. Primary customers will include both mining and construction companies.

The Rajant network is composed of BreadCrumb devices that form a wireless, meshed, self-healing network for fleet management, health monitoring and other critical mining and construction applications such as Caterpillar's Vital Information Management System (VIMS), asset management, condition monitoring, operator communication and dispatch.

Many vehicles and workers that require wireless communications are constantly on the move throughout the mining network. The Rajant network's BreadCrumb nodes can rapidly adapt to any changes in the network topology, assuring that IP traffic uptime and bandwidth are maximized. Operators of mining and construction companies directly benefit from the Rajant network by an increase in operational efficiency and lower operating costs, saving them money.

"Wheeler is very proud to be an authorized Rajant reseller," said Todd Rigby, General Manager, Equipment Management Division, of Wheeler Machinery Co. "The Rajant BreadCrumb solution has helped mining and construction companies become safer and much more efficient with their operations. We are excited about the opportunity to utilize Rajant's BreadCrumbs as part of technology solutions we offer to our customers. We believe this technology will prove to be a true competitive advantage to those companies who choose to implement it."

Kärcher Futuretech goes Arabic
http://www.army-technology.com/contractors/field/kaercher1/press11.html
Virtual expansion into new worlds

From the beginning of this year, the Kaercher Futuretech website is now also available in Arabic. Following the German, English, Spanish and French versions introduced to the Internet in the last two years, the adaptation of the site to the Arabic language presented a special challenge for the programmers and web-designers. The compatibility of Latin and Arabic characters and the user interface, which is aligned from right to left, are particular features of the newly created site.

Already since December 2005, visitors have been able to enter the virtual Kaercher Futuretech world. Current news, innovative product information, videos, exhibition reviews and much more are features of the re-designed website which was modernized at the end of last year.

Other language versions are under construction: for example, this year the site will also feature a Russian language service. "We consolidate our worldwide network by a continuous worldwide web appearance which undergoes a constant refinement process," states internet project leader Nicole Reichert who places strong emphasis on the use of increasingly important online communication for the Kaercher Futuretech brand.
