MASS Protection System to be Mounted on German Minehunters - Immediate Operational Requirement for UNIFIL Deployment
http://www.army-technology.com/contractors/camouflage/buck_neue/press22.html
The German Navy has contracted with Rheinmetall Defence to supply MASS naval protection systems for two of its minehunter vessels. MASS stands for 'Multi Ammunition Softkill System'. Under an immediate operational requirement order, one MJ 333-class vessel and one HL 352-class vessel are to be equipped with a MASS two-launcher configuration system with integrated detection unit by May 2008. The total order is worth some &uro;10 million.
Following successful sea trials, the German Ministry of Defence turned to Rheinmetall in 2007 to have four of its F123-class frigates immediately equipped with this technology prior to deploying to the Eastern Mediterranean. Thus far, three frigates of this class have been equipped with the four-launcher configuration of MASS, teamed with the electronic warfare system and the MSP 500 multi-sensor platform.
SUPERIOR NAVAL FORCE PROTECTION WITH MASS
Guided missiles pose an increasing threat to civilian and naval shipping. MASS protects ships from attacks by advanced, sensor-guided missiles on the high seas and in coastal zones as well as from asymmetric threats. The system fires decoy rounds which distract and seduce an incoming missile's target seeking system.
Fully automatic, the Mass decoy system offers substantial tactical, operational and logistical advantages, and can be installed on ships of all types. It can be integrated into any command and control system, but also operated on a stand-alone basis. Programmable and omni-spectral, the system's innovative ammunition assures protection in all relevant wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum (UV, EO, laser, infrared and radar).
MASS WITH INTEGRATED DETECTION UNIT
In this order MASS is combined with an integrated detection unit (MASS_ISS - Integrated Sensor Suite). The detection unit features built-in sensors for detecting radar and laser threats, including a laser warner receiver (NLWS), which is also connected to the onboard “Multi Sensor Platform MSP 500In, an electro-optical (EO) sensor system made by Rheinmetall.
Moreover, the existing radar warner receiver (equipped with a classifier for electronic support measurement) will be replaced by a state-of-the-art electronic support measures system, the SME 100. Integrated by Rheinmetall Defence in cooperation with Saab Avitronics, this system makes it possible not just to recognize an approaching target, but to classify and, in best-case scenarios, to identify it by category and type.
Since the product's launch in 2003, Rheinmetall Defence has booked orders for MASS from the navies of seven nations - a total of 96 launchers for 13 different classes of vessels ranging in size from patrol boats and minehunters to corvettes, and frigates. The navies of Germany (K130 corvettes), Finland (SQUADRON 2000), Norway (SKJOLD patrol boats), Sweden (Visby, Göteborg and Malmo-class vessels), the United Arab Emirates (Baynunah programme), Oman (Khareef-class vessels) as well as one other country in the Middle East have all successfully introduced MASS technology.

MaxVision
http://www.army-technology.com/contractors/computers/max_vision
MaxVision is a leader in the extreme portable and transportable computer workstation marketplace. In 1999, MaxVision introduced the first MaxPac® portable PC workstation. Unlike all other full power portable PC computers, the MaxPac featured full-sized 17in LCD displays with options for multiple displays.
Today, MaxVision sets the standard for extreme rugged portable PC workstations featuring 19in - 20.1in LCD displays with additional display options, a special filtration system for operation in the dustiest of conditions, and high disk capacity with removable hard drives to allow for sensitive information to remain secure. Today's MaxPac® utilizes an integrated UPS to ensure enough time to shut down the system without losing critical data.
CUSTOM DESIGNED RUGGED PORTABLE COMPUTERS
Approximately 50% of MaxVision's portable workstation production is full-custom or semi-custom design. These products are developed specifically for OEM resellers, large corporate customers, and military agencies. These products do not appear on our website out of respect for our partner/customer's confidentiality.
MaxVision uses mass custom design and manufacturing. This provides quick-turn prototype design and fabrication pilot production lots. Custom PCBs, custom sheet metal, custom machined metal, and durable plastic parts can all be fabricated using these techniques provide cost and time effective production quantities of 10 to 1,000 units.
COMPONENT FABRICATION
MaxVision has forged extremely tight relationships with low-level component fabricators of metal and plastic parts only minutes away from our facilities. All design is performed in a comprehensive 3D solids CAD environment with tight revision control for all mechanical and packaging components. Typical prototype fabrication time is 2-3 weeks on both sheet metal and CNC fabrication.
Stereo lithography is used to create master molds of free-formed plastic parts which are produced using polyurethane resins and silicon mold casting techniques. These parts are reinforced when needed with metal inserts in the casing process.
If production above 1,000 units is required, injection mold tooling investments are made. This approach allows high quality, quick turn around production of metal and plastics without the expense or delay of injection mold tooling. However, these techniques are cost effective for medium quantity production up to 50 units per month.
MaxVision uses standard motherboards, video cards, and hard drives in all of its portable designs. Certain printed circuit boards are custom designed by MaxVision to consolidate integration functions and interconnect relating to LCD display control, audio, and power supply systems. These designs are performed by MaxVision engineers and prototyped using quick turn fabrication and assembly within MaxVision. Volume production is then turned over to PCB assembly subcontractors in the area.
SEMI-CUSTOM COMPUTER MODIFICATIONS
MaxVision routinely provides semi-custom modifications to standard products such as OEM logos and simple modifications needed to support special add-in cards and interconnect. Special transit case design is also provided to meet the special needs of customers. These semi-custom modifications require minimal commitments and can typically be delivered in less than 30 days.
Whether you are an applications-specific integrator, software business dealing with the portable video or data acquisition and analysis, or have a particular military or intelligence mission needing a entirely new product; MaxVision is your best partner for custom design and production of portable computing. You will be impressed how fast the process can move and how reasonable the commitment can be.

Omnis
http://www.army-technology.com/contractors/jamming/omnis
Omnis advise and equip individuals, organisations and governments who seek to address the threat of international terrorism, criminal activities and actions of desperate individuals who aim to disrupt lives. With specialist knowledge in a wide range of areas, Omnis can provide consultation and equipment across the counter-terrorism spectrum. These include:
Bomb jammers - cellular jammers and other ECM equipment
Armoured vehicles - Omnis is one of the leading suppliers of high quality new and used armoured vehicles
Protective equipment ? bullet-proof vests, blast blankets, helmets and jackets
OMNIS OMS-041 - PORTABLE HIGH POWER, LOW FREQUENCY BAND BOMB JAMMER
The Omnis OMS-041 is an RF jammer designed specifically for the purpose of paralysing and immobilising the two-way full duplex RF links between mobile cellular telephones and the local cellular cells with which they are communicating when in use. The jammer is constructed to jam the downlink cellular signals for the country where the jammer has been designated for use. As a result, all cellular telephones within the protected area of the activated jammer will not be able to receive or transmit calls. Cellular telephones outside the protected area will not be affected.
OMNIS OMS-042 - PORTABLE HIGH POWER FOUR-BAND BOMB JAMMER
Not only cellular telephones can be programmed to activate a planted bomb. In many countries around the world, bombs have been detonated remotely by terrorists by using very simple devices such as remote controls for car alarms or garage doors etc. Due to this ever-growing risk, we have developed the Omnis OMS042, an RF jammer designed specifically for the purpose of paralysing and immobilising several low frequency bands within a predetermined area.

ASB Group
http://www.army-technology.com/contractors/electrical/asb-group
ASB-Group is a specialist in the research, design and manufacture of thermal batteries, and a European market-leader. Due to their inherent technological advantages, our thermal batteries are a factor in the success of all current major aeronautical,
space and defence projects across the world. The ASB-Group is based in France (ASB), the UK (MSB) and the USA (ATB, Inc.).
PRIMARY-LITHIUM THERMAL BATTERIES
Thermal batteries are primary lithium batteries, which are totally inert prior to activation. They are therefore completely maintenance-free over a very long storage-life, and are the only power sources able to operate reliably in very harsh
environments.
This includes extremely low and high temperatures (they have a range of more than 100°C), extremes of pressure, EMI, acceleration, etc. Thermal batteries represent ideal power-sources for electronically-operated guidance systems in missiles,
underwater craft, land, sea and air-defence systems.
CUSTOMISED AND MULTIPURPOSE THERMAL BATTERIES
Thermal batteries can provide several output voltages from one battery. They are compatible with pulse regime as well as steady load demands. They can easily replace several power-sources with a considerable gain in volume, weight and reliability,
becoming the sole source of onboard power to electronics and actuators.
Able to be custom-designed, with appropriate bracket and connector configurations, thermal batteries are the optimal solution for the supply of power in all ranges of missiles, guided rockets and bomb kits, as well as ejection seats, because of their
ability to instantaneously supply electrical power.
LAN TECHNOLOGY
The exclusive LAN technology in our products allows a significant gain in volume and imparts the highest specific-power ratio (in W/kg) of thermal batteries. High-voltage batteries (more than 150V) are installed onboard fighter aircraft as
emergency-power supplies, reliably providing the requested power after years of storage in operational conditions.
Combined in battery sets, these batteries are also dedicated to actuators and TVC systems. Recent progress has now opened the door to even higher power and longer duration, for instance for underwater and space applications.
MILITARY THERMAL BATTERY APPLICATIONS
The thermal battery is the ideal solution for artillery shells and smart munitions because of its intrinsic qualities, especially robustness with regards to harsh environments and storage conditions. Moreover, a built-in sticker mechanism can allow
self activation under launch-acceleration effects.
Recent innovations have allowed the repackaging of the thermal battery to provide all the advantages within a miniaturised volume: by combining innovative manufacturing process and new electro chemistries, a power of 2W is now available in a volume of
around 1.5cm³.
Produced in high volumes, the competitive price of this new range of thermal batteries enables them to become ideal solutions to power fuses, safety and arming units, dropped sensors, smart munitions, grenades and other on-board micro-systems.
GLASS-TO-METAL SEALING
With its strength in the field of hermetic seals for batteries, ASB has created ASB Hermetics, a glass-to-metal seal business unit. Exclusive technologies, such as low-temperature sealing on aluminium and titanium,
and high-performance sealing for high pressure connectors, are now available for aeronautics, optics and high added-value sectors.

Noptel specialises in the design and manufacture of innovative optoelectronic products based on distance and position measurement and supplies shooter training systems and measurement systems for industry and defence forces. The shooter training systems exploit the company's latest innovations and offer the customer simple and efficient ways of training troops. Noptel has supplied systems to more than 60 countries since 1982.
SHOOTER TRAINING SYSTEMS
Noptel was the first company to introduce an advanced optical shooter training and analysis system for everyday use by military professionals, law enforcement groups and sport shooters. It is now the leading supplier of marksmanship training systems worldwide.
Today Noptel has a strong position in many countries, with many major customers who trust the company's products. In addition to advanced measurement technology, Noptel possesses well-proven skills in severe environment technology and technical shooting analysis.
COMPREHENSIVE SHOOTER TRAINING CONCEPT
More than just hardware or computer software is required for the efficient training of professional shooters. Based on a long experience of working with prominent customers worldwide, the company has developed a small arms shooting training concept for the efficient training of military and law enforcement professionals.
The basic idea is to encourage the development of a training system starting out from the conceptual level rather than just buying some hardware. This is very important with respect to both the efficiency of the training and the achievement of the best possible cost/benefit ratio for the investment.
SAFETY AND REALISM
Noptel 2000 is safe, transportable and simple to use, minimising the overhead time required conducting training sessions. This will result in maximum training efficiency. The Noptel concept makes it possible to train anywhere, indoors or out of doors, at real distances and under real environmental conditions, using dry fire, an advanced recoil system or blank ammunition to bring realism into the training!
MARKSMANSHIP TRAINING
The Noptel ST-2000 trainers are light in weight and portable. The basic training sessions can be arranged indoors in a normal classroom but also out of doors using real target distances including natural light- and weather conditions. The software includes all common military and police disciplines and new ones can be edited in easily.
The trainers work with conventional targets, which can be down scaled for basic training in classrooms. You can use your own targets for training. No electric current or wiring is required in the target. This also allows training with multiple and moving targets, and the use of the same target simultaneously by a number of shooters.
The system evaluates with the help of computer the key factors of the shot performance providing immediate and accurate feedback for systematic marksmanship skill development. The shot analysis is easy to understand and provides both graphical and numerical information on shooter's technical performance (hold, aim and trigger control). It reveals the shooter's strong and weak points in an illustrative way. New versions of software are freely downloadable from the Internet. The system supports more than ten languages.
FIELD TRAINING
The Fighter system is an optimal system for small-scale action and combat shooting training, allowing quick, easy setups with a variety of pop-up and turning targets. The simplicity of the system allows efficient training any time and anywhere in a real environment. The system provides tools for the core issue: training of shooting at hostile targets in any field or urban environment. A realistic training environment, including natural light and weather conditions, will provide the actual conditions of a live situation and pose a natural challenge for the participants in the exercise.

ZHENDRE
http://www.army-technology.com/contractors/field/zhendre
Since 1955, ZHENDRE has designed, developed and manufactured military refrigerated containers for extreme condditions which enable troops in theatres of operation to be provided with fresh and frozen foodstuffs. Over fifteen armies worldwide use our refrigerated containers on a daily basis. Most UN peacekeeping missions are equipped with ZHENDRE refrigerated containers.
Within the scope of a technical partnership with the French Army, ZHENDRE has developed various models of refrigerated containers ranging from 1m³ to 20ft. All of them can be used on DLCP (Demountable Load Carrying Platforms), inter-operable systems between numerous NATO armed forces.
AIR-TRANSPORTABLE REFRIGERATED CONTAINERS
The 1.5m³ refrigerated container is the lightest (aluminium structure) and most mobile among the ZHENDRE refrigerated container range. It is designed for supplying one section (around 30 men), and is mainly used in the battle zone's front line. The 1.5m³ refrigerated container is air-transportable approved.
ONE-THIRD OF 20FT LENGTH MILITARY REFRIGERATED CONTAINERS
The 6m³ military refrigerated container is commonly used by companies (around 150 men). Assembled by three, we end up with exactly the same dimensions as a 20ft refrigerated container.
20FT REFRIGERATED CONTAINERS
With a volume of around 20m³, the 20ft refrigerated container is our biggest container and is commonly used by battalions (around 500 men), and generally deployed on the rear logistic base. It can either be manufactured in single compartment or dual compartment versions. Special versions are also available, such as mobile post-mortem or mobile medical containers.
All ZHENDRE military refrigerated containers are autonomous, as they are fitted with their own power generator. They are designed to maintain indoor temperatures between +4°C and -22°C, and for outdoor temperatures ranging from -20°C to +55°C.
CUSTOM-DESIGNED REFRIGERATED CONTAINERS
In addition to these three types of refrigerated containers especially designed for the French Army (which is equipped with around 800 ZHENDRE refrigerated containers), ZHENDRE also designs custom-made refrigerated containers for other armed forces as per specific technical specifications.
ZHENDRE refrigerated containers are in service in tens of countries, most of the time under extreme climatic conditions.
ZHENDRE possesses, in its Villenave d&squo;Ornon factory near Bordeaux, an in-house climatic test chamber. This 11m x 6m isothermal housing enables us to test the performance of our military refrigerated containers under ambient temperatures ranging from -20°C to +53°C.
These countless cabin trials, complemented by more than 50 years of experience and feedback from numerous theatres of operations, enable ZHENDRE to provide its military and paramilitary customers with refrigerated containers that are sturdy, reliable and able to function for many years under the most extreme conditions.
MILITARY AIR-CONDITIONING UNITS (ECU)

Since 1955, ZHENDRE has designed, developed and manufactured military air conditioning units. In partnership with the French Army, ZHENDRE has developed a comprehensive range of tent air conditioners designed to withstand intensive use under extreme conditions.
Today, over 2,000 air conditioners equip the tents and the field hospitals of more than a dozen armies and are in use in the main theatres of operation (Afghanistan, Bosnia, Iraq and Kosovo).
6kW TENT AIR CONDITIONING UNIT
The CTZ6H55 tent air conditioning unit's 6kW capacity enables it to air-condition 20m² to 40m² tents depending on their configuration (sunscreen or not, outdoor temperature, number of occupants). It is lightweight and easily transportable thanks to its wheels and handles.
Stackable on three levels, this air conditioning unit's storage is optimised during non-utilisation period. It is guaranteed to function up to +55°C. The air distribution inside the tent is carried out by means of two insulated ducts. The regulation of the temperature is thanks to a wired thermostat placed inside the tent.
10kW TENT AIR CONDITIONING UNIT
The CTZ10H55 air conditioner has a 10kW capacity. Dimensional characteristics are identical to the ones of the 6kW air conditioner, but it can air-condition tents of 35m² to 70m².
10kW BI-BLOCK TENT AIR CONDITIONING UNIT
The CTZ10AC55 is the same air conditioner as the CTZ10H55 but in bi-block form. It can straddle the wall of a tent where the floor is separated from the walls of the tent.
16kW TENT AIR CONDITIONING UNIT
Larger than the preceding air conditioning unit, the CTZ16H55 has a 16kW capacity and can air-condition tents of 60m² to 120m². Its design and means of running are identical to the CTZ6H55 and CTZ10H55.
23kW TENT AIR CONDITIONING UNIT
The CTZ23H55 air conditioner has a capacity of 23kW. Dimensional characteristics are identical to the 16kW air conditioner but it can air-condition tents of 100m² to 200m².
CBRN ENVIRONMENT TENT AIR CONDITIONING UNITS
The CTZ10SP is a 10kW 'split system' tent air conditioning unit. Composed of two parts, connected by a flexible refrigeration pipe, this design favours the tightness between the tent and the air conditioner, thus making it perfectly suited for CBRN applications.
SHELTER AIR CONDITIONING UNITS
Concurrent with the tent air conditioners and benefiting from its expertise in the comfort air-conditioning field, ZHENDRE designs, develops and manufactures custom-made air conditioning units for tactical shelters such as command posts, radar stations, telecommunication centres, diverse workshops and CBRN detection centres.

Fly-K is Ideal for New Operational Scenarios
http://www.army-technology.com/contractors/ammunition/rheinmetall/press19.html
Rheinmetall unveils new low-signature weapon system
Today's armed forces increasingly find themselves deployed in out-of-area missions in which troops exposed to a multitude of different threats. Keeping a low profile can help, and not just during covert operations. Being able to engage the enemy without revealing one's own position can give friendly troops a vital edge.
A wide variety of different ammunition types are already available, including High Explosive (HE), white phosphorous smoke/obscurant and practice rounds. The Fly-K family of ammunition also features an illumination round for the visual and infrared spectrum; others contain grappling hooks and anti-frogman warheads.
An HE round with a proximity fuse is planned, as are several variants with non-lethal payloads (red phosphorous smoke/obscurant, CS and OC gas, flashbang stun ammunition) and marking rounds (coloured smoke and chemo-luminescent markers).
The weapon is designed for use in a wide variety of tactical scenarios:
Single-shot launcher
Intended for use by individual infantrymen, this variant is ultra-light and very safe to handle. The single-shot launcher is also highly reliable, even in rugged operating environments.
Multi-shot launcher
An electronically controlled weapon system with several different types of ammunition fired at a controllable launch speed in variable salvoes. Light and robust, it can be readily mounted on tactical vehicles. To cite just one example, the concept enables lightly armoured vehicles or boats to respond to an attack without revealing their position.
This revolutionary principle revolves around the unique interaction of the weapon and ammunition. As soon as the weapon transmits the ignition impulse to the ammunition, an enclosed internal propelling system launches the round.
Among other things, this approach offers the following advantages:
Low signature during launch
Noiseless: less than 52 dB at 100m distance
No heat signature: undetectable by IR sensors
No smoke: cannot be visually detected in daylight
No muzzle flash: cannot be visually detected at night
Low weight means being able to carry more ammunition per unit
No possibility of double-feeding due internal propelling system
Possibility of constant fire; no overheating of the weapon
A wide variety of ammunition types enables a multitude of missions

Rheinmetall buys Switzerland's Zaugg Elektronik AG
http://www.army-technology.com/contractors/ammunition/rheinmetall/press18.html
The Düsseldorf-based Rheinmetall Group continues to expand its defence technology portfolio, taking up a 100% stake in Zaugg Elektronik AG of Lohn-Ammannsegg, Switzerland, effective 1 January 2007. Jointly owned, Zaugg Elektronik was previously controlled via a holding company.
The takeover represents another important strategic step in Rheinmetall's consolidation of the European land systems sector, strengthening the Group's status as a single-source supplier of medium- and large-calibre ammunition. As well as widening its range of products, the acquisition reduces Rheinmetall's dependence on external suppliers and opens up new sales opportunities.
An internationally renowned manufacturer of military fuse systems, Zaugg Elektronik AG supplies numerous European and North American defence contractors with highly specialized fuses for medium- and large-calibre ammunition.
Rheinmetall Defence is one of Europe's leading suppliers of systems and equipment for ground forces. Its Swiss subsidiaries include Oerlikon Contraves AG, Nitrochemie Wimmis AG and RWM Schweiz AG, making Rheinmetall Switzerland's largest private sector defence contractor.
Powered by piezo, battery or generator, Zaugg Elektronik AG's electronic and electromechanical fuses are designed for extreme operating parameters, meaning that they are often found in tank ammunition and state-of-the-art bunker-busting rounds. For example, piezo-electronic fuses for bunker-busting munitions have to be able to withstand levels of shock stress more than a 100,000 times greater than acceleration due to gravity.

Rheinmetall Defence Wins Order for GUZ Expansion
http://www.army-technology.com/contractors/training/stn/press13.html
New connection to southern training area
Germany's Federal Office for Defence Technology and Procurement (BWB) has awarded Rheinmetall Defence a contract for a major expansion of the German Army's Combat Training Centre (GUZ) in the Altmark district of Saxony-Anhalt, which has been steadily ramping up operations ever since 2001.
The order encompasses new GUZ system technology for the previously non-instrumented southern part of the Altmark Major Training Area as well as additional mobile online video technology. For Rheinmetall Defence's Simulation and Training Division, the order is worth some &uro;25 million.
Building on a 2006 order for the complete modernization of system technology for the GUZ command and control center and communications network, the new order encompasses expansion of the TETRA wireless data link and tactical voice communications, meaning that exercises conducted in the southern section of the training area can soon be controlled and monitored from the GUZ command and control center. Among other things, new radio relay stations will be erected in the training area and connected to the command and control center by fibre optic cable.
Just as with the modernization of the command and control center, the contract for connecting the southern section was awarded with the proviso that training operations must be able to carry on without interruption. Once the regeneration and expansion work is completed, the German Army will have an enhanced performance, state-of-the-art system at its disposal that will enable highly realistic combat training, ensuring that troops are well prepared for future operations.
Furthermore, Rheinmetall Defence will be supplying two additional video relay vehicles for online recording and documentation of exercises. The new video units will augment the three systems already supplied to the GUZ, and are equipped for the first time with night vision cameras, enabling exercises to be recorded even under conditions of poor visibility. This will make it possible to exploit the full capabilities of the GUZ video system for mobile online transmission, presentation and processing of parallel battlefield videos in the command cell 24 hours a day.
The German Army's Combat Training Centre (GUZ) is on the global cutting edge with regard to operational effectiveness, depth of simulation and ability to deliver a highly realistic training experience. Expanding the GUZ system technology to include the southern section of the training area, coupled with ongoing regeneration of the computer network, will not merely maintain but materially improve the efficiency of this unique facility.
The regenerated Combat Training Centre and its southward expansion will give the German Army the world's most advanced system of its kind, now set to encompass the entire Altmark Major Training Area, and making a major contribution to operational readiness.

AB Precision (Poole) Ltd
http://www.army-technology.com/contractors/mines/ab_precision
AB Precision (Poole) (ABP) was established in 1966 and has become a world leader in the design, manufacture and supply of high-quality equipment for use in Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD), and hazardous environments.
ABP's range includes Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs), disruptors, de-armers, mine-disposal equipment, mine prodders, limpet mine-disposal equipment, non-magnetic tool kits, exploders, a remote light source, detonator crimp tools and other EOD-related equipment.
ABP ‐ THE EOD WORLDWIDE STANDARD
Much of ABP's equipment is used by the UK's Ministry of Defence (MoD), and is considered by many to be the worldwide 'standard' by which others are judged. France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Kuwait, the UAE, Norway, Sweden, Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand and many countries have chosen ABP products.
ABP offers comprehensive training and after-sales service. Equipment may be customised to meet specific requirements, including integration of specialist equipment. Full user and technical training ‐ either at a location specified by the customer, or at ABP's facility ‐ is available. Spares and service backup is available for at least ten years.
GUARDIAN MINIATURE REMOTELY OPERATED VEHICLE (ROV)
Guardian is ABP's newly introduced 'next generation' mini ROV. Guardian provides the EOD operator with a step-change in capability, versatility and operability. Thanks to ABP's experience and pedigree, and its work with 'real' users of this type of equipment, Guardian's unique features and capabilities have been designed to ensure even the most demanding task can be carried out reliably and effectively with minimum operator workload.
These capabilities include four-track modules which operate as front and rear pairs, and have continuous 360° rotation capability, providing the ability to negotiate varied terrain, climb significant obstacles, provide unrivalled control and stability during common functions such as stair climbing and allow additional reach height. For even more arduous off-road capability Guardian can be fitted with 10in (250mm) tractor style wheels, whilst retaining the track modules to improve obstacle-negotiation capability.
'Real physics' operator feedback provides the vehicle status and positional parameters for the operator via a 3-D image. This image is an accurate representation of the vehicle and its position and takes account of weight, centre of gravity and terrain position. This information allows the control system to automatically warn the operator of potential instability or situations where actions such as weapon firings may impact on the vehicle. High-sensitivity GPS provides additional positional data.
A hybrid extending and folding arm provides class-leading articulation whilst retaining one of the highest payload lifting-capabilities in its class.
The Guardian's 415mm (width) by 758mm (length) minimum footprint ensures 'mini vehicle' status and allows access to confined spaces in urban environments and on trains, buses and planes. Guardian's ability to deploy both its track modules independently provides a length of 1280mm when greater stability is required.
Its modular, sealed construction provides ease of maintenance and facilitates CBRN decontamination.
ABRASIVE WATERJET CUTTING SYSTEM (AWCS)
AWCS is a high-integrity, extremely-flexible cutting system for use in hazardous applications, primarily designed to enable an operator to carry out decommissioning operations on sensitive munitions in a safe and controlled manner whilst operating from a safe distance (although use in any hazardous environment is possible).
AWCS has been designed to meet rigorous UK MoD requirements, including formal safety, environmental, EMC and reliability qualifications. AWCS has a number of competitive advantages over other equipment on the market, including:
Target-scanning to effect consistent cutting head stand-off from the target, ensuring efficient and reliable cutting

Protection Doesn't Have to be a Burden
http://www.army-technology.com/contractors/transport/zero_cases/press1.html
In today's environment everyone wants it smaller, lighter and cheaper. It's no different when it comes to the world of protective packaging.
Especially 19in electronics going into tough environments, where conditions also call for environmental and shock protection.
Traditionally 19in rugged enclosures and cases are either heavy and expensive or just too lightweight.
Zero engineers took on board this challenge and with input from some of its major clients have developed what they think is the perfect package.
Taking their popular Aluminium 19in commercial case for the external shell, Zero has developed a lightweight inner frame suspended in rigid close cell foam combining to make the Zero 19in Hybrid case.
Initially Zero is offering a 4u case which weighs in at an incredibly light 9kg. But the case is no lightweight; it has recently been subjected to DefStan 81/41 Military level N drop tests and passed. Loaded with a total weight of 20kg the case was subjected to a 300mm drop on all faces and corners.
If that wasn't enough Zero then decided to subject it to a 1m level J drop test. Despite the inevitable bumps and bruises it survived, maintaining its integrity and still allowing the lids to be open and shut. The case is also sealed to a minimum rating of IP54.
Zero has high expectations that this product will more than satisfy this major gap in the case market and are already in the process of developing a 7u version for release later this year.

Schonstedt Donates Detectors to Locate Landmines and Explosive Remnants of War
http://www.army-technology.com/contractors/mines/schonstedt/press9.html
The US Department of State is pleased to recognize Schonstedt Instrument Company's donation of over US$75,000 worth of magnetic detectors to help humanitarian deminers locate and clear persistent landmines and explosive remnants of war.
Schonstedt Instrument Company, an employee-owned company in Kearneysville, West Virginia, is one of the 61 public-private partners of the Office of Weapons Removal and Abatement in the US Department of State's Bureau of Political-Military Affairs. Since May 2007, the company, which manufactures specialized detectors used by survey, demining, utility, telecommunications and energy firms around the world, has donated 74 of its GA-72Cd magnetic detectors for demining in Laos, Somalia, Tajikistan and Vietnam, in coordination with the United Nations Mine Action Service. Some of the 20 detectors donated to Somalia have also been used by the International Mine Action Training Center.
Schonstedt Humanitarian Demining Initiative ('Buy a Schonstedt, Save a Life') donations can come about in two ways. First, companies that buy one of Schonstedt's TraceMaster II or XTpc pipe and cable locators can have a magnetic detector donated in their name to a United Nations Mine Action Team for use in a conflict-affected country. Second, companies can make direct donations. Quakers in Woodstown, New Jersey, recently raised money to purchase 12 Schonstedt magnetic detectors for donation, which were matched with another 12 detectors from Schonstedt. All 24 detectors have been sent to Vietnam where they will be used by MAG, both of which are also Office of Weapons Removal and Abatement Public-Private Partners.
To learn about the Office of Weapons Removal and Abatement's bilateral and multilateral humanitarian mine action programs, and its Public-Private Partnerships, which together have contributed to dramatically reducing the rate of reported casualties from landmines and explosive remnants of war around the world to 5,759 in 2006.
