“Water to Go” for the British Armed Forces - Innovative Water Bottling Plant Success in Afghanistan
http://www.army-technology.com/contractors/field/kaercher1/press13.html
At the end of February, Krcher UK Ltd completed the installation of a water bottling plant for British armed forces in Afghanistan. The plant, which is located in Camp Bastion in the Helmand Province, has been provided to Kellogg, Brown and Root (KBR), a company that conducts logistical support for the British Military.
The plant purifies, bottles and labels the water from local boreholes and can produce 50,000 one-litre bottles a day. This is only the second plant of its kind and the first ever in its particular configuration of two water purification systems and four water bottling systems.
KRCHER Futuretech has also provided millions of PET preforms to be used in the plant. To make the one litre bottles, these preforms are warmed in a heating carousel and then blown up in a mould using compressed air. The bottles are then placed on a conveyor track, which transports them through the filling, capping and labelling stations. Finally, the bottles are banded into six-packs and stacked onto pallets.
The components included two WTC 1600 treatment systems, which can decontaminate and desalinate 1600 litres an hour; and four WBP 700s, which can produce up to 700 one litre bottles per hour. Each component was housed in a separate 20 ft ISO container, which allows either part or all of the system to be redeployed to new locations.
The equipment will allow huge cost savings for the British forces. Previously, bottled water was trucked, at a huge cost, to the British military camp from Pakistan. This required over thirty times the number of trucks that will be now being required to transport preforms.
MOBILE WATER PURIFICATION - AT A GLANCE
Powerful. With its reliable and innovative water purification systems, developed by people for people, KRCHER Futuretech's equipment provides help where it is needed. Depending on the actual requirement, the systems of the Waterclean series produce 10,000 to 240,000 litres of tasty drinking water per day - enough to supply up to 60,000 persons.
And well-portioned in bags by the innovative 'Water Packaging System' or filled in bottles by the 'Water Bottling Plant', clean drinking water is a decisive factor for the health of every person. This underlines the claim of the KRCHER Futuretech water purification concept: from source to consumption."

Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle (EFV)
http://www.army-technology.com/projects/efv/
The US Marine Corps selected General Dynamics Land Systems to develop a new Advanced Amphibious Assault Vehicle (AAAV) in 1996. The name was changed from advanced amphibious assault vehicle to Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle (EFV) in September 2003.
"The EFV will replace the current US Marine Corps amphibious assault vehicle which entered service in 1972."
The EFV will replace the current amphibious assault vehicle which entered service in 1972. The current requirement is for 573 vehicles comprising personnel variants (EFVP1) and command variants (EFVC1).
The expeditionary fighting vehicle provides the Marine Corp's Marine Rifle Squad with tactical mobility in amphibious operations and in the subsequent ground combat manoeuvres. On land the EFV will carry out manoeuvre and combat operations as part of the Marine Air-Ground Task Force.
The vehicles will be launched from US Navy amphibious ships at a ship-to-shore distance up to 25nm, i.e. beyond the visual horizon. The vehicles can transit to shore at high speed and travel inland up to 200 miles without refuelling. Once refuelled the vehicles have a range up to 340 miles.
The EFV began System Development and Demonstration (SDD) in 2001. In March 2007, General Dynamics was awarded a continuation of the SDD phase with funding for a Design for Reliability (DFR) phase to September 2008. Low-rate initial production is planned for 2010 with Initial Operating Capability (IOC) in 2014.
The IOC will cover systems for three platoons. One EFV platoon, for marine expeditionary unit deployment, will consist of 13 personnel vehicles and one command vehicle. One platoon will be dedicated to new equipment training and a third platoon will be in production.
PERSONNEL VARIANT (EFVP1)
Both the personnel and the command variant provide voice communications and standard Variable Message Format (VMF) and United States Message Text Format (USMTF) digital information including messages and overlay data.
The vehicles are operated by a crew of three, vehicle commander, gunner and driver. The personnel variant carries 17 fully equipped marines, i.e. a rifle squad of 17 Marines each with individual combat equipment. The vehicle has internal stowage for each marine's ammunition and march-load equipment, i.e. the load for the prosecution of combat operations for extended periods with access to daily resupply.
The vehicle will also be capable of carrying other crews and equipment, and has a cargo capacity of 8,150lb in lieu of infantrymen.
COMMAND VARIANT (EFVC1)
The command variant vehicle, EFVC1, is a command and control platform at battalion and regimental levels and carries the three vehicle crew plus the battalion and regimental staff.
"The fighting vehicles can transit to shore at high speed and travel inland up to 200 miles without refuelling."
The vehicle is linked to the US Marine Corp's C2I (Command, Control and Intelligence) and the USMC fire support.
The vehicle accommodates the three vehicle crew stations and seven command crew stations. The command variant vehicle is armed with a 7.62mm general-purpose machine gun. The troop commander's station is equipped with voice and data communications, a digital map display and a display downloaded from the vehicles' thermal imaging systems.
CONSTRUCTION
The EFV is of a planing hull design for high speed across water and is constructed of 2519-T87 aluminium, a high-strength aluminium-copper alloy. Integral spall protection is installed and blast-protected seats are fitted. The hull provides protection against armour-piercing rounds and fragmentation devices.
Access to the troop compartment is via a hydraulically operated rear ramp. A troop door is also fitted into the ramp and two sliding hatches are installed in the roof over the troop compartment. The engine compartment is located in the centre of the vehicle and the troop compartment is in the rear of the vehicle up to the sides of the engine compartment. The troop compartment is fitted with armour protected padded seats and seat belts. It is air-conditioned and fitted with an overpressure collective protection system against nuclear, chemical and biological warfare.
WEAPONS
The electronically powered two-man mk46 turret on the personnel variant accommodates the commander on the right and gunner on the left, a fire control system and the main and coaxial weapons.
"The EFVs are operated by a crew of three, vehicle commander, gunner and driver."
The mk46 turret incorporates a 30/40mm ATK mk44 Bushmaster automatic gun which has a firing rate of 200 rounds a minute and can fire all standard NATO 30/40mm ammunition.
A general purpose M240 7.62mm machine gun with 600 rounds of ready-to-use ammunition is mounted coaxially with the main gun. Smoke grenade launchers are installed on the hull.
FIRE CONTROL
The vehicle has fire-on-the-move capability and the hit probability is 90% at a range of 1,200m. The turret is equipped with a compact modular sight developed by General Dynamics which includes a thermal imaging sight, laser rangefinder and Kearfott Dual Axis Head Assembly (DAHA). The DAHA is gyroscopically stabilised to 50mrad in azimuth and in elevation and provides the stabilised line of sight for the weapon fire control system on vehicle.
L3 Communications, Cincinnati Electronics was awarded a contract for a 'drop-in' replacement for the thermal sight on the EFV in September 2007. The sight is based on L3, CE's NightConqueror thermal imager, which uses a medium-wave (3.6-5.0 micron) indium antimonide staring focal plane array.
The commander's station is equipped with five forward and one rear-facing periscope sights providing a view of 360 azimuth.
ENGINE
The EFV is powered by a 2,700hp dual-use (for land and water) MTU MT883 Ka-523 diesel engine. The 12-cylinder diesel engine is mounted in the centre of the vehicle. On metalled roads the maximum speed is over 45mph.
The actively damped hydro-pneumatic suspension units, supplied by General Dynamics, and the vehicle's lightweight band track reduce the noise and vibration and give a more comfortable and fuel-efficient ride for the crew.
"The EFV has fire-on-the-move capability and the hit probability is 90% at a range of 1,200m."
The continuous moulded lightweight band track was developed by Goodyear and provides traction and strength comparable to the heavier, standard block-type track. The vehicle has seven pairs of road wheels and hydro-pneumatic suspension units fitted with automatic ride height control.
About 80% of the amphibious vehicle's mission is performed on land and 20% in water. The vehicles can be deployed in high-speed amphibious landings in seas up to sea state 3.
In order to sustain movement in the transition between water and land drive, for example in movement in water over high corals reefs which would otherwise cause dangerous hang-ups for amphibious assault vehicles, the vehicle is equipped with a power transfer module supplied by Allison Transmission Division.
The power transfer module automatically shares engine power between waterjets and the vehicle tracks according to how it senses the need. The powertrain and the driveline absorb the transition shock as the vehicle rapidly shifts from one operating mode to another while the vehicle traverses obstacles such as coral mounds in the water.
When the vehicle is afloat, the engine couples via the Power Transfer Module to Honeywell counter-rotating 23in water jets mounted on both sides of

RapidM?s products are compliant with the following HF modem standards: STANAG 4539, STANAG 4285, STANAG 4415, MIL-STD-188-110A/B, STANAG 5066, MIL-STD-188-141B and MIL-STD-188-141A.
HIGH-SPEED HF MODEM WAVEFORMS
Data is transferred at rates of up to 9,600b/s full-duplex over a standard 3kHz HF radio link, and 19k2 over an Independent Side Band (ISB) link.
Adaptive equalisation mitigates the effects of HF channel multi-path. Convolution encoding combined with soft-decision Viterbi decoding provides forward error correction. Cancellation of narrowband co-channel interference is accomplished via adaptive tone excision capable of eliminating up to four signals.
RM6 HF MODEM AND ALE CONTROLLER UNIT
The RM6 is a JITC-certified external High Speed Data (HSD) modem unit. The RM6 is designed to operate in conjunction with an external STANAG 5066 compliant ARQ server, for example RapidM?s RC66 HF email suite.

Allen-Vanguard Launches CBRNE Hazard area Prediction Tool for its Remotely Operated Vehicles
http://www.army-technology.com/contractors/civil/allen/press15.html
Leading global security specialist Allen-Vanguard has launched ROV-Track CBRNE, a unique software application for its Defender and Vanguard%#153; bomb disposal robots which predicts and illustrates CBRNE hazard areas around a suspect device.
The hazard prediction is based on data compiled by meteorological and CBRNE sensors integrated with the ROV and transmitted to the command console. Scene controllers are provided with a clear visual display of potential down-wind exposure enabling the formulation of a safe and effective response. Continual recalculation based on prevailing conditions means that controllers can make decisions based on real-time status.
ROV-Track CBRNE predicts the hazard area based on relevant standards for blast effect, fragmentation and the characteristics of CBRN agents. However, these standards may be manually updated in line with the user's experience and response protocols. Defender has integral GPS and can be fitted with up to four sensors as well as a set of disruptors. The smaller, more lightweight Vanguard(TM) can carry two sensors.
"ROV-Track CBRNE presents controllers with vital information in a clear, user-friendly format," says Glyn Buckler, sales director at Allen-Vanguard. "It can function as an independent incident control point management tool for first responders or communicate seamlessly with central incident control applications. The ability to modify language and maps in line with national standards make it a valuable piece of equipment for bomb squads and HAZMAT first response teams anywhere in the world."

Vanguard Goes Digital
http://www.army-technology.com/contractors/civil/allen/press14.html
Allen-Vanguard, the global security specialist, has launched a digital version of its mini ROV, the Vanguard.
The new version of the Vanguard has been upgraded with a digital command console enabling 'plug and play' accessory functionality, intuitive control and full interoperability with its sister ROV, the BombTec*#153; Defender. The digital architecture means new devices can be added to the ROV 'network' and controlled remotely without returning the remotely operated vehicle to the workshop and suffering downtime.
Combined touch screen and hard controls mean multi functioning is easy - for example, lights and cameras can be controlled while driving forward or the arm can be manipulated when steering. In addition, the hand controller can be removed from the console to provide limited functionality via Bluetooth - this is particularly useful for training, maintenance and driving the ROV in and out of its transporter.
"This new version of the Vanguard(TM) is robust and versatile, and can confidently perform an extensive range of first response functions," explains Glyn Buckler, sales director at Allen-Vanguard. "Its modular construction and straightforward electronics make maintenance and support in the field simple and inexpensive, improving the life-time value of the robot."
Glyn continues: "Allen-Vanguard is investing heavily in its facilities to become a global centre of excellence for the R&D and production of ROVs. Our aim is to drive the evolution of ROVs to meet the changing needs of first responders, by ensuring greater reliability, enhancing performance levels and enabling more complicated tasks to be carried out remotely."

MMIST
http://www.army-technology.com/contractors/logistics/mmist
Mist Mobility Integrated Systems Technology (MMIST) is the world's leading full-solution provider of Precision Aerial Delivery (PAD) products and services, including the Sherpa? family of GPS guided parafoils, and the CQ-10A SnowGoose? cargo Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). MMIST products provide an important alternative to ground transportation in remote areas (which can be costly, slow and dangerous).
SHERPA GPS-GUIDED PARAFOIL PAD SYSTEMS
Sherpa PADS enable safe, accurate and cost-effective delivery of cargo from a variety of fixed / rotary-wing aircraft. Sherpa systems achieve high accuracy without dangerous low-level flight, enabling cargo delivery in mountainous terrain, zero visibility, or outside the reach of MANPADS. PAD is also an IED-proof cargo delivery method.
All Sherpa variants are fully autonomous and GPS guided; SAASM GPS and remote manual control, with the unique ability to reprogramme the target point in-flight with the push of a button, is also available. All variants feature fully guided ram-air parafoils which maintain positive control of the load throughout the entire flight, with a final soft landing at approximately half the rate of descent of round parachutes.
Sherpa variants feature a robust ability to overcome adverse winds, and offers significant flexibility with respect to dispatch scenarios. The Sherpa Ranger and Navigator are HAHO and HALO capable, thanks to a uniquely programmable drogue delay.
Sherpa systems are supported by the US Department of Defense's Joint Precision Aerial Delivery System (JPADS) mission planner, which forms part of the standard C-130J training programme.
SHERPA RANGER GPS-GUIDED PARAFOIL
The compact, lightweight Sherpa Ranger is ideally suited to deliver small cargo bundles of 50lbs to 700lbs to re-supply special or conventional forces working in a Distributed Operation (DO) environment.
The Sherpa Ranger exceeds JPADS ultra lightweight requirements and is sold with / without a ram-air parachute, with some customers choosing to furnish time-expired personnel parachutes like the MC-5 or MP360.
The Sherpa Ranger is designed to work with a variety of cargo containers, including cargo nets, A-21 and customer containers.
SHERPA NAVIGATOR PAD SYSTEM
This workhorse of the PAD world, capable of carrying loads of up to 2,200lbs, replaces the G-12 Container Delivery System (CDS) parachute. It interfaces directly with the A-22 container or the Low-Cost Container System (LCCS) and other custom containers and payloads, and can be used in dual-row (DRAS) mode.
Replacing unguided round parachutes with a precision system reduces the amount of cargo which does not reach its destination potentially falling into enemy hands.
When total lifecycle costs are considered, the Sherpa Navigator provides high-end accuracy and standoff more cheaply than throw-away Low Cost Delivery System (LCDS) or Improved Container Delivery System (ICDS) alternatives.
SHERPA PROVIDER GRAVITY EXTRACTED SYSTEM
The largest of our gravity extracted systems, the Sherpa Provider can support 2,200lbs to 10,000lbs of cargo and offers the lowest cost per pound of cargo delivered compared to any other aerial delivery system available, including AGAS, LCADS and ICDS. It interfaces with 463L, Type-5 platforms or Enhanced Container Delivery Systems (ECDS), and customer payloads or containers.
In commercial applications, the Sherpa Provider can be used with large fixed-wing aircraft to speed up delivery times, lower transportation costs and reduce transportation greenhouse gas emissions by up to 60%.
SHERPA MANPACK ‐ AUTOPILOT FOR PARACHUTISTS
Much more than a navigation aid, the Sherpa Manpack actually controls the steering lines of any standard personnel rig. The system enables search and rescue teams and military personnel to reach their intended target despite challenging wind and / or poor visibility.
CQ-10A SNOWGOOSE MULTI-ROLE CARGO UAV
The SnowGoose cargo UAV is a multipurpose aerial platform which autonomously delivers up to 575lbs of cargo to up to six individual locations, including medical aid, food and water, or PSYOP leaflets. This UAV can be ground-launched from a truck or trailer, or air-launched directly from a C-130 or C-17 aircraft.
Each cargo bay accepts modular electronic payloads, including mobile phones, radio relay, FM / TV broadcasts, EO / IR video, loudspeakers, meteorological sensors, UGS dispensers, SIGINT, and EW payloads.

Austal is the world leader in the construction and design of bespoke, high-speed aluminium police boats, patrol boats and multi-role vessels for both commercial and defence applications. With five shipyards now operating in Western Australia, Tasmania and the USA, Austal has delivered more than 200 vessels for customers worldwide.
Austal&squo;s 160 strong in-house design team excellently complements its powerful productive capacity. The company's success in a competitive market is also attributed to its strong service and support network, financial and technical strength, and an ability to work with each customer to identify and meet their specific requirements.
AUSTAL HIGH-SPEED SUPPORT VESSELS
Twice as fast as any conventional sealift ship anywhere in the world, Austal's high-speed military support vessels get closer to the fight, thanks to a draft that is approximately 60% less than its traditional steel counterpart, freeing it from dependence on deepwater ports.
Lightweight aluminium construction technology requires lower engine powering and delivers economical operating characteristics, which results in efficient and reliable service and substantially reduced operating and maintenance costs.
These ships excel at discharging troops and equipment at all but the smallest ports, even lagoons and beaches. This flexibility and manoeuvrability maximises access and creates considerable logistical and tactical advantages, including creating uncertainty for an enemy by having the ability to land forces in locations where they are least expected.
The ability to use austere and degraded ports also creates an advantage over aircraft, which are naturally limited by the size and quality of landing sites available. Multi-purpose operational roles include:
Amphibious assault support
Rapid personnel deployment
Helicopter support
Search and rescue
Command and rescue
Humanitarian relief operations
Deployment of police and customs teams
"WESTPAC EXPRESS" CATAMARAN
In July 2001, the US military contracted Austal's Auto Express 101m catamaran "WestPac Express" for operations supporting the Third Marine Expeditionary Force (III MEF). They received all the benefits of well-proven commercial ferry technology, constantly enhanced through operational experience, delivering a low-risk solution to their transportation requirements.
"WestPac Express" can accomplish in a single voyage what typically takes US Air Mobility Command multiple flights spread over a 14 to 16 day period. "WestPac Express" saves III MEF some 250 flights, and millions of dollars, each year, while also completing the overall transport task faster.
Capable of sustaining loaded speeds of 36kn, "WestPac Express" rapidly transports a complete battalion of more than 950 marines together with up to 550t of vehicles and equipment, in one lift, delivering considerable strategic and cost advantages.
Since entering service, the vessel has covered an impressive 75,000 nautical miles per annum, and delivered operational availability of an incredible 99.7% ? previously unheard of in military transport circles.
PATROL BOATS
Austal is able to provide patrol vessels to address a broad cross-section of needs for heightened security and surveillance in ports and coastal waters.
Sizeable orders from clients such as the Australian customs service, the Royal Australian Navy, Kuwait coast guard and the Republic of Yemen have established the company among the world's elite patrol boat suppliers.

CMI Defence
http://www.army-technology.com/contractors/turrets/cmi
Headquartered in Seraing, Belgium, CMI has changed a great deal in the space of a few years, diversifying its activities, extending its services and increasing its structure by purchasing companies with a great deal of potential. Today, CMI is an international group that comprises 27 business units and employs 2,300 people in 18 countries.
CMI DEFENCE PRODUCTS
CMI Defence specialises in weapon systems for light armoured vehicles and has a 100-year history in the defence industry.
A world leader in 90mm calibre gun systems, CMI Defence has recently introduced its CT-CV 105mm weapon system (gun and turret).
COCKERILL MK3M-A1 AND CSE 90 TURRET
The Mk3M-A1 is a development of the COCKERILL Mk1, Mk2, and Mk3 90mm low-pressure gun family. More than 2,300 guns of this family are in operation all around the world on various vehicles including ALVIS Scorpion, TEXTRON / CADILLAC GAGE V-150 and V-300, AV-TECHNOLOGY Dragoon, ENGESA Cascavel and Urutu, etc.
Light, compact, with a smooth but short recoil, easy and economical to operate and maintain, and capable of firing a wide range of ammunition including APFSDS-T, it has proved to be an ideal weapon for vehicles of 7.5t and above.
The COCKERILL Mk3M-A1 90mm gun is either sold independently or incorporated in the CSE 90 turret, a two-man turret of classical architecture especially developed for it. The CSE equipment can be precisely tailored according to the user's requirements and budgetary constraints with electro-mechanical power drives, day/night gunner and commander sights associated to a laser range finder and ballistic computer.
162 CSE 90 turrets have been produced and fielded in Malaysia on the SIBMAS 6x6.
COCKERILL MK8 90mm GUN AND LCTS TURRET
The COCKERILL Mk8 is a medium pressure 48.5 cal 90mm gun designed for vehicles in the 10t to 20t class. Firing high efficiency ammunition, it offers performances very close to the 105mm guns fitted on heavier vehicles.
It is usually associated to the CMI LCTS 90 turret, a two-man turret that can be equipped with sophisticated equipment, such as:
Fully stabilised day/night (thermal) gunner sight with laser range finder and ballistic computer for firing on the move and at moving targets
Fully stabilised panoramic commander sight offering almost hunter-killer capability
The LCTS 90 turret / Mk8 gun system is fielded in Qatar and Kuwait and delivered to the Saudi Arabia National Guard under an FMS program.
CT-CV WEAPON SYSTEM (105mm)
The CT-CV weapon system is designed to meet the present and future requirements of modern armed forces for powerful weapons on light air transportable vehicles. A series of trials and stringent tests have been conducted successfully and final qualification is underway.
The turret and gun have been completely developed in-house by CMI thanks to its long standing experience in the design of systems specifically adapted for light and air deployable vehicles.
It is a two-man turret armed with the "CV" gun with low recoil force.
The system is compatible with all current NATO 105mm ammunition but the barrel has been designed to be able to fire ammunition with higher pressure as well as smart ammunition and guided missiles.
With a view to complying with specific requirements from customers, CMI Defence has designed a modular system able to integrate alternative sub-systems.
Particular attention has been paid to safety and comfort of the crew. The crew is seated low in the turret to take advantage of the vehicle hull protection. For safety reasons too, the crew and ammunition compartments are independent and separated by a firewall; in addition, crew protection is ensured thanks to a safety fuse plate above the ammunition rack.
The system is equipped with an automatic loader which contains 16 rounds in standard configuration and 12 rounds in air-deployable configuration.
The system is ready to fire immediately upon leaving the aircraft and is capable of panoramic observation after 15 minutes. The complete system can be prepared in about 4 hours, including the installation of a pintle-mount or RWS and the fitting of add-on armour.
The sighting system for both the gunner and the commander consists in two identical displays, one for day vision and the other one for night vision. The gunner's sight with laser range finder is stabilised for firing on the move and at moving targets. A panoramic sight gives the commander observation and hunter killer capabilities.
Back up devices are foreseen to allow continued use of the turret in case of loss of electrical power supply.
One of most striking features of this new system resides in its BLOS (Beyond Line of Sight) firing capabilities thanks to a 42 gun elevation, adapted to urban and mountainous warfare conditions as well as allowing firing against airborne targets.
The CT-CV is definitely the most advanced system available today to serve the needs of modern armed forces.
UPGRADING AND UP-GUNNING PACKAGES FOR EXISTING TURRETS
CMI Defence also use its experience in turrets and guns for light armoured vehicles to offer up grading / up gunning packages for various existing turrets. As examples, let us mention:
90mm conversion for the Scorpion 76mm with our Cockerill Mk3M-A1 90mm gun, including the installation of an electro-mechanical power drive and an upgrade to the fire control system
Upgrade package for the Cadillac Gage 90mm turret of the V-150 and V-300, including the upgrade of the Cockerill Mk2 90mm gun, with installation of an electro-mechanical power drive and an upgrade to the fire control system

Comm Ports gets US Navy
http://www.army-technology.com/contractors/civil/comm_port/press6.html
Comm port Technologies has been selected by SAIC for their security needs for Under Vehicle Surveillance systems for US NAVY Base.
US NAVY and SAIC selected Comm Port Technologies Inc, a New Jersey based manufacturer of UVSS (Under Vehicle Surveillance Systems) for their recent security needs. Comm Port was selected due to the advantage of using the same Ramp for in going and outgoing traffic using their new Flex Series product line and this helped the US NAVY as well as SAIC to reduce the installations to half the number of installations they had budgeted for.
Instead of using two ramps per lane for incoming and outgoing inspections the Comm Port Flex series UVSS-8801 model was selected that has a flexibility to have alternate camera arrangements for inward and outward traffic patterns. The saving was for total number of Ramps as well as the installation time and cost for busy entrances.

Future Rapid Effects System (FRES) -
http://www.army-technology.com/projects/fres/
The UK's Future Rapid Effects System (FRES) programme includes five families of medium-weight vehicles, in at least 16 variants, and the procurement of an estimated 3,300 vehicles. The FRES vehicles are to meet the Army's long term needs for new medium-weight armoured fighting vehicles and will be deployed on rapid intervention, enduring peacekeeping and peace enforcement operations and support to high intensity, major combat operations.
"The UK's Future Rapid Effects System (FRES) programme includes five families of medium-weight vehicles."
The first FRES vehicles will enter service in 2012 and the vehicles will be in production until about 2030.
The five vehicle families are utility, reconnaissance, medium armour, manoeuvre support and basic capability utility vehicles. The requirement, first announced in 1998, was for 3,700 vehicles, but by 2006 this had been reduced to 3,300 vehicles. The actual number of vehicles to be procured will not be announced until MoD main gate approval is reached.
The 13bn FRES programme is the highest priority equipment programme within the British Army. The whole-life cost is estimated at 50bn. The utility vehicles will include 1,700 to 1,900 wheeled 8x8 vehicles from 25t to 30t, accounting for 60% of the number of FRES vehicles and about 50% of the programme costs.
The specialist FRES vehicles ‐ reconnaissance, medium armour and manoeuvre support families ‐ will consist of about 1,500 vehicles, 40% of the FRES vehicle total and 50% of the cost. The fifth family, basic capability utility vehicles, will not be to a full FRES specification and will be procured separately from the FRES programme.
FRES ALLIANCE
In November 2006, the UK Ministry of Defence announced that an alliance arrangement would be put in place for FRES, similar to the UK CVF aircraft carrier alliance. The FRES Alliance is led by the MoD with the support of an industrial System of Systems Integrator (SOSI) and a group of three industrial teams for each of the FRES vehicle families. The industrial teams for each vehicle family will include a vehicle integrator, vehicle designer and vehicle manufacturer.
"FRES vehicles will enter service in 2012."
The vehicle integrator carries out the integration of the complex systems into the vehicle platform. These include communications, command and control, vetronics (vehicle electronics), sensors, weapons and defensive aids systems.
The vehicle designer is the designer of the family of vehicles that wins the family 'Trials of Truth'. The utility vehicles Trials of Truth were completed in 2007.
The vehicle manufacturer will either manufacture its own design FRES vehicle or carry out licensed manufacturing under agreement with the vehicle designer. If the vehicle designer is not a UK company, early production could be carried out at the company's existing manufacturing facilities abroad and then full production would be transferred to the UK.
SYSTEM OF SYSTEMS INTEGRATOR (SOSI)
The FRES System of Systems Integrator (SOSI) will be responsible for integration across all the FRES vehicle families and interoperability between FRES vehicles and other UK armed forces systems. The SOSI will also carry out system engineering, capability integration, and programme and design management.
Companies which registered interest in the SOSI contract in early 2007 included BAE Systems, Lockheed Martin UK (teamed with Ultra) and Thales (teamed with Boeing). In October 2007, the UK MoD announced that Thales UK, in partnership with Boeing through its Boeing Defence UK subsidiary, had been selected as the preferred bidder for the role of System of Systems Integrator for the FRES programme. The SOSI contract was awarded to Thales / Boeing in January 2008.
FRES PROGRAMME
The UK 1998 Strategic Defence Review identified the British Army's requirement for a new fleet of medium-weight vehicles. The FRES programme remained a concept for about six years. Delays were mainly due to an inability to define the changing requirements and an acceptable procurement strategy.
"The 13bn FRES programme is the highest priority equipment programme within the British Army."
By 2004, it was decided that the FRES programme would be structured and managed in overlapping phases, with an assessment phase from 2004 to 2009, a demonstration phase from 2007 to 2012 and acquisition approval and manufacturing phase in 2010.
An initial assessment phase led by the systems house, Atkins, was started in 2004 and completed in 2007. The Assessment Phase 1 (AP1) is to progress the FRES utility vehicle and Assessment Phase 2 (AP2) will progress the specialist vehicles, i.e. the reconnaissance medium armour and manoeuvre support vehicles.
FRES TECHNOLOGY DEMONSTRATOR PROGRAMMES
A series of Technology Demonstrator Programmes (TDPs) was launched in order to reduce risks before the main gate decisions on FRES. The contracts were placed under the FRES Integrated Technology Acquisition Plan (FRES ITAP). The aim of the TDPs is to establish evidence on the maturity of technologies for early FRES vehicles or for later capability upgrades.
Three improved-protection TDPs have been placed to examine improved vehicle self-protection for FRES: hard kill defensive aids system TDP (May 2005 to December 2006) placed on Akers Krutbruk Protection AB; electric armour TDP (January 2006 to June 2007) placed on Lockheed Martin UK INSYS, with team members SAIC (Science Applications International Corporation) and QinetiQ; and integrated survivability TDP (January to December 2006) placed on Thales with team member Boeing.
In August 2005 General Dynamics UK was awarded an 18-month contract for the FRES Chassis Concept (Electric Drive) TDP (August 2005 to March 2007). The development programme was based on the in-hub electric drive and hybrid power system of GD's Advanced Hybrid Electric Drive (AHED) 8x8 wheeled demonstrator. The AHED mobility trials were carried out in April 2006 at the Bosch Automotive Proving Grounds, South Bend, Indiana.
"The FRES programme remained a concept for about six years."
BAE Systems was awarded two FRES TDP contracts, the FRES chassis concept (based on the SEP vehicle) TDP and the FRES gap crossing TDP (January 2007 to Sep 2007). The MOD's Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL) was awarded the TDP stowage and capacity contract (February 2005 to May 2006).
Two separate Electronic Architecture TDP contracts (August 2005 to March 2006) were awarded to teams led by Lockheed Martin UK and Thales. The Lockheed Martin UK team included Ultra Electronics, Smiths Aerospace, Scisys, PA Consulting, and Cranfield University.
The Thales team included Thales, BAE Systems Insyte, QinetiQ, Ncode, IFS Defence, McLaren Electronic Systems, Eaton Aerospace, Aerosystems International and the University of Sussex.
FRES UTILITY VEHICLES
The first variant of the FRES family to enter service will be the FRES utility vehicle, initially for protected mobility, command and control, light armoured support, medical, repair and recovery and driver training roles. Later FRES utility vehicles will include specialist communications, electronic warfare and sensor vehicles.
The MoD launched three competitions in November 2006 to select the FRES Utility Vehicles Design (UV Design), the Utility Vehicles Integrator (UV Integrator) and a System of Systems Integrator (SOSI).
UTILITY VEHICLES DESIGN
The competition to select the utility vehicles designer is known as the Trials of Truth. In June 2007 t

The cockpit and cabin are fitted with a heating and ventilating system supplied by Keith Products. The Keith Products heating, ventilation and cooling systems are fitted as standard equipment for all civilian EC145 versions of the Lakota UH-72A.
MISSION SYSTEMS
The modular design of the helicopter allows the fast and efficient installation of a range of mission modules.
For ambulance and medical evacuation missions, the cabin can accommodate two stretchers, plus one crew chief (who is qualified to operate the hoist and other aircraft equipment) and one medical attendant. The UH-72A's NATO standard stretchers and stretcher retainer mounts are supplied by Aerolite of Washington.
The helicopter has an externally-mounted rescue electric hoist, series type 44301 from Goodrich Corporation. The hoist is mounted on a boom and support assembly that allows it to be positioned in an arc of up to 63 from the aircraft fuselage centerline for maximum operational flexibility. The hoist is stowed in line with the fuselage during flight.
ENGINES
The helicopter is powered by two Turbomeca Arriel 1E2 tuboshaft engines, each providing 550kW of take-off power and 516kW continuous power. The engines are rated to provide a maximum power of 574kW for two and a half minutes and 404kW continuously in one-engine-inoperable-mode fight.
FLIGHT TRAINING
