Delivery of Last MILIS Thermal Sight to the Greek Army
http://www.army-technology.com/contractors/surveillance/theon/press4.html
On June 24 2008, the last of MILIS (Milan Lightweight Infrared System) thermal sights rolled out of Theon Sensors production line in Koropi, Greece. A total of 147 of these sights were manufactured in Greece by the local company, Theon Sensors, as part of a contract signed with Sagem Défense Sécurité (Paris, France).
The MILIS thermal sights were a major part of a contract, which was signed in 2003 between the Hellenic Ministry of National Defense and Euromissile, for the upgrade of the MILAN anti-tank system of the Hellenic Army.
The ceremony occurred with the presence of representatives from the General Directorate for Defence Investments and Armaments, the Hellenic Army General Staff, the Embassies of France and Germany in Athens, as well as representatives of Euromissile and Sagem Défense Securite.
The contract between Theon Sensors and Sagem Defense Securite was signed in October 2004 and the project was implemented as planned while all deliveries were made according to the agreed upon schedule. This program serves as a testimony of a successful cooperation, undertaken in the frame of Industrial Cooperation between the French company and the Greek MoD and included technology transfer, training and sub-contracting work. The work performed by Theon Sensors included fabrication of sight components, assembly, integration and testing as well as final qualification and acceptance tests which were carried out for every sight in the presence of Sagem Défense Sécurité representatives.
The MILIS thermal imager is a member of the MATIS third generation family of thermal imagers currently developed and produced by Sagem Défense Sécurite. The MILIS uses an afocal type of configuration which means that, it does not have its own aiming system; it is attached on the MILAN day sight thus allowing the use of the main aiming system at night or under low light conditions.
During his address speech, the representative of Sagem Défense Sécurité expressed the company's satisfaction for the successful cooperation between the two companies and announced that they are in final negotiations for the placement of a new follow on order to Theon Sensors for additional MILIS thermal imagers to fulfill requirements of an international customer.
The President of Theon Sensors, Mr Christian Hadjiminas, mentioned that during the last 12 months the company received orders (mainly for exports) in the order of &uro;70M as opposed to its 2007 turnover of &uro;12M, while its current backlog stands at &uro;92M. Theon currently participates in procurements in 21 countries around the world amounting to &uro;75M.

SJH Projects
http://www.army-technology.com/contractors/protection/sjh
SJH Projects provide consultancy, testing and a range of products to protect against the effects of blasts. Projects have been undertaken in counter-terrorism, landmine and IED protection and the storage and transportation of munitions. Other more specialist blast protection applications have also been dealt with for customer-specific requirements.
XPT BLAST PROTECTION MATERIAL
SJH Projects has its own blast mitigation material - XPT. This is used in a number of the company&squo;s products such as the Mailsafe and Detsafe ranges. It is comprised of sacrificial bonded material that absorbs a large amount of kinetic energy when broken up in blast waves. XPT can also be used as part of a system to protect vehicles from underside blasts such as landmines or roadside bombs.
DETONATOR TRANSPORTATION CONTAINERS
The movement or storage of detonators can create logistical hurdles and added expense. SJH Projects detonator containers are designed to reduce the hazard classification of transporting detonators down to the same level as small-arms rounds. This provides much greater flexibility and safety for all those who have to work with or around such items. Certification to 1.4S is the responsibility of national Competent Authorities and is detonator specific. SJH Projects can assist with the certification process.
SJH Projects can produce a variety of configurations using standard and modified ammunition boxes. In the event of a detonator firing, the XPT chambers inhibit propagation and insulate the detonators from heat ‐ essential for transportation approval and protection in a road traffic accident with its inherent risk of fire.
FUELSAFE PROTECTIVE JERRYCANS
Long distance operations in the field often require additional supplies of fuel. The jerrycan is the age old tool for this job, but if such operations are in a hazardous environment the transportation of unprotected fuel on vehicle roof racks is an unnecessary risk. Tested with hand grenades, the Fuelsafe protective jerrycan protects both petrol and diesel from close range explosive devices.
VEHICLE MINE AND IED PROTECTION
Because of the way in which XPT blast protective material absorbs blast and dampens accelerations and the through transmission of energy, it is ideal for use on the underside of vehicles. It can be used to enhance the protection of armoured vehicles or to provide landmine protection to soft skinned vehicles. For soft skinned vehicles the stiffness of the body has to be upgraded, which is best achieved through the use of a roll cage. SJH Projects can work with each customer to make sure that all the factors that affect survivability are addressed, so that the XPT-based system becomes part of a viable protection system.
BUILDING BLAST PROTECTION PANELS
XPT blast mitigation panels can be used as an effective blast cladding system. Ideal for mail screening rooms and explosive storage and processing facilities, they are simple to erect and remove at a later date if required. One of the key benefits of XPT panels is that they absorb a high proportion of the blast. This greatly reduces the damaging effects that take place when reflected blast waves interact.
When conditions dictate, the XPT system is further enhanced with ballistic fibre reinforced composite panels. Extensive experience in the use of such composites ensures that the result will be most efficient and cost-effective.

Ford F-Series
http://www.army-technology.com/projects/fordpickuptruck/
The Ford pick-up truck has to be one of the most well-known tough-duty vehicles in the commercial arena. However the same design has also made an impression on the military market.
In early 2000 Ford produced a concept truck for the US Army based on their popular F-350 super duty crew cab. The design was structurally modified and equipped with advanced drive train, suspension, electrical and electronic components and was able to pass a series of desert field trials.
"The Ford pick-up truck has to be one of the most well-known tough-duty vehicles in the commercial arena."
This development was part of the US Army's COMBATT (commercially based tactical truck) programme, which aimed to use modified commercial trucks for military use to replace ageing vehicle fleets at low cost. In March 2008 the Iraqi Police purchased 2,600 vehicles including 300 Ford F-350 super duty pick-up trucks to strengthen its patrol vehicle fleet in the provinces.
F-350 SUPER DUTY
The F-350 super duty COMBATT was structurally modified to a gross vehicle weight of 12,700lb.
The design included enhanced axle differentials, upgraded suspension, electronically controlled high performance shock absorbers, additional air springs, a central tyre inflation system and also military specification 37in tyres with a run-flat system. The truck was also equipped with protective armour on the underside as a safeguard measure for rough terrain.
In addition there was an onboard computer with an advanced global positioning satellite navigation system, night-vision system, collision warning system, and an upgraded military electrical system providing 12V, 24V and 110V AC power. The truck was also designed to ford 30in-deep water and also to operate in temperatures from -50°F up to 120°F.
An additional development version of the F-350 is being designed as a lightweight vehicle that is more fuel efficient under the IMPACT (improved materials and powertrain architectures for 21st century trucks) programme.
The usual power unit for the F-350 in military use is the six-litre power stroke V8 diesel (350hp) with a five-speed 5R110W automatic or six-speed manual gear box and 4×4 transmission (width 80in). The F-350 has a variety of chassis lengths from 137in standard to 158in extended cab. Fuel tank capacity can be from 29gal to 38gal depending upon the body configuration.
ARMOURED F-350
The ULTRA AP is a specially armoured majorly modified Ford F-350 pick-up truck (larger than the HumVee). The roadside bomb problem in Iraq and Afghanistan has required a move toward armoured vehicles even for light patrol operations.
"In March 2008 the Iraqi Police purchased 2,600 vehicles including 300 Ford F-350 super duty pick-up trucks."
The ULTRA AP (armoured patrol) uses lightweight armour, bullet and blastproof glass and a new armoured car-like concept body on the F-350 chassis and changing the seating arrangements so that passengers do not sit over the wheels (passengers face out all around the vehicle to watch for threats). The vehicle is also heavily armoured under the chassis and can deflect mine and bomb blasts away from the passenger compartment (blast bucket), which also acts as a roll cage.
The development has been less expensive than purpose-designed vehicles and has been shown to be very effective (under test by the Office of Naval Research). The Afghan Army has had the presence of mind to put in an order for 5,000 modified F-350s for patrols across rough terrain. Another similar armoured car design based on the F-350 chassis is the Sand Cat (developed by Plasan in Israel).

Vectronix breeds Miniature Night Vision Monocular
http://www.army-technology.com/contractors/surveillance/leica/press7.html
With over 50,000 BIG/BIM image intensified night vision devices in operation, Vectronix decided to make its next product significantly lighter and smaller than existing MIL-spec goggles and monoculars, without sacrificing quality or performance. This objective was reached using miniaturized components and a revolutionary 16 mm image intensifier tube. TARSIUS16 is the name of the new Miniature Night Vision Monocular which weighs 30% to 45% less than comparable devices using 18mm tubes.
Even in its basic configuration, TARSIUS16 offers several extremely useful features. Automatic adjustment for varying levels of ambient light (auto-gating) and manual gain control ensure longer tube life and optimal scene rendering. The ergonomic design reduces the training effort and allows intuitive operation.
The infrared illuminator enables movement and working in total darkness. It responds instantaneously to the user, and unlike other night vision systems, TARSIUS16 ensures 100% situational awareness by eliminating the moment of darkness as the IR illuminator is activated. An indicator alerts the operator when the IR illuminator is active to prevent his being detectable by accident.
Three types of batteries can be used, all of them standard types that are commercially available. The 3 V lithium battery CR123A lasts for 55 hours of operation. Alternatively, an AA size 1.5 V alkaline or a 1.2 V NiMH will fit. A low battery indicator is projected into the field of view so that the user is never caught unaware.
A 3x magnification lens can easily be clamped in front of the objective to increase the observation and surveillance range.
With its Smart Mount, TARSIUS16 can be configured specifically for the user's mission. The transition from single to dual mount, and from handheld to face mask, helmet or other system is quick and does not require any special tools. The Smart Mount permits individual adjustments for a comfortable, secure fit. Stable mounting plus minimum size and weight enhance the operator's agility and effectiveness.

Elite Ventures
http://www.army-technology.com/contractors/field/elite-ventures
Elite Ventures specializes in fabricating accommodation units for military and civilian camps through the manufacturing of ISO-certified steel containers, flat-pack prefabricated containers and trailer caravans; all standardized to 20ft and 40ft in size. Elite offer a variety of units such as sleeping units, kitchens, storage, showers, toilets, offices and recreation units, all built in 20ft or 40ft standard containers. Developing and realizing complex projects is done easily, due to our past experience with many international clients that we have dealt with.
ISO STEEL ACCOMMODATION CONTAINERS
Elite Ventures supply all types of ISO steel containers in all sizes, the most common of which are the 20ft and 40ft containers. These containers can be either brand new, or five-to-ten years old but still in excellent condition. Elite offer an unparralelled level of design flexibility and can accommodate any suggestions or special requirements a client might have. The containers usually come fully-furnished, containing all the furniture for the specified unit, with AC, water-heaters and more, depending on the unit type.
Some of the units Elite Ventures produce include:
Sleeping units
Office units
Kitchen and dining units
Medical and lab units
Recreaction, entertainment and gym units
Sanitary units
Laundry units
Garage and storage units
Guard station units
This is by no means a definitive list, and Elite Ventures are always open to any suggestions regarding different types or combinations of units in a single container.
ISO STEEL AND FLAT PACK ACCOMMODATION CONTAINERS
Construction camps, civilian and military housing needs, and industrial facilities are just some of the areas where flat pack accommodation containers may prove useful and cost effective. Modular buildings are an ideal solution in remote or rural areas, especially in situations where construction may prove inconvenient or even impossible.
The main advantages of flat packs are that they are relatively cheap, fast to assemble, and durable. One of their negative aspects, however, is that they have a limited lifespan of two or three years if looked after. ISO steel containers, on the other hand, can survive for up to ten years if properly maintained. Flat packs require labour to assemble them, whereas ISO steel container accommodations come ready-made. In addition, flat pack accommodation buildings are limited to only two stories in height, whilst, ISO steel container accommodations allow for up to seven stories.
TRAILER CARAVANS
House-trailers and mobile homes are accommodations that are usually manufactured off-site in factories. These types of accommodations usually consist of very strong trailer frames, axles, wheels and tow-hitches. Due to the fact that house-trailers are on wheels they have the advantage that they can be relocated at any time with no hassle. Most measure 30ft in length.
BESPOKE FIELD ACCOMODATION SOLUTIONS
All Elite Venture products are produced in the company&squo;s own warehouses, with stringent attention being paid to client requests and specifications. This helps the company accommodate a client&squo;s every specific material requirements, as offering the customer high quality bespoke products is of paramount importance to Elite. To ensure high quality, all materials are carefully sourced from the finest suppliers in the UAE and Europe. In addition, Elite&squo;s manufacturing facilities are designed to take into account any sudden raise in production capacity in case a client requires to rapidly setup a camp. Subsequently, the reliability, mobility and fast deployment of equipment is of paramount importance to Elite Ventures.
Elite Ventures constantly strives to develop mutually rewarding relationships with all of its customers, conduct operations to the highest ethical and professional standards, and aims to achieve and often exceed in fulfilling the expectations of both current and prospective clients.

Joint Venture Partnership Enhances US Army DVE-FOS System
http://www.army-technology.com/contractors/computers/digital-systems/press1.html
Digital Systems Engineering, Inc. (DSE) and Digital Design Corporation (DDC) have teamed to create a line of "smart monitors" supporting the US Army Driver's Vision Enhancer - Family of Systems (DVE-FOS) Program. Based on the LCD display requirements of DVE-FOS, DSE and DDC have contributed core technologies to design and implement the DVE Rugged Advanced Processing Tactical Overlay Recorder (RAPTOR) Series which exceeds the program's Display Control Module (DCM) specifications.
Currently, monitors installed in DVE-FOS systems are not equipped with a Digital Video Recorder (DVR). The DVE RAPTOR offers a ruggedized digital video recorder and image processing platform to upgrade the DVE-FOS system. The DVE RAPTOR can be mounted inside of any tactical wheeled vehicle; it is backwards compatible (electrically, mechanically, and user interface) with current legacy DVE installations, yet offers the latest video capabilities in image processing, graphic and symbology overlay, and digital video recording.
Through its design and display technology, the DVE RAPTOR gives users more control over situational awareness. This allows users unprecedented advantages in image analysis and processing in applications such as target acquisition, surveillance, information gathering or debriefing, intelligence recording and live capture scenarios. The DVE RAPTOR's video imaging technology provides real-time recording and/or processing of high frame-rate 16-bit hi-resolution imagery in ruggedized applications. The DVR provides multiple independent channels, a variety of conventional VCR and "Tivo" type controls, and accommodates a wide range of input and output formats.
Another key feature of the rugged DVE RAPTOR display includes integrated Night Vision Imaging System (NVIS) technology (MIL-STD-3009 Class B compliant), with a near zero color shift when used during night-time operations. This allows the DVE RAPTOR to maintain a full color picture - 24 hours a day, and the display will not bloom out Night Vision Goggles (NVGs) when at maximum brightness.
Other video image processing functions targeted at DVE-FOS include:
Local Area Processing (LAP)
Advanced RS-170 Scan Conversion
Image scaling and electronic zoom
Electronic image stabilization
Cascaded function data processing chains
Data compression and storage
Graphic overlay
Custom user interfaces
Sharpening filters
Noise reduction filters
Picture-in-Picture (PiP)

Piranha V
http://www.army-technology.com/projects/piranhav/
General Dynamics United Kingdom Limited has been selected by the UK Ministry of Defence as the provisionally preferred bidder for the Utility Vehicle Design (UVD) for the Future Rapid Effect System (FRES). The UK MoD announced the selection in May 2008.
Subject to satisfactory completion of the package of work on risk reduction, General Dynamics UK will develop the Piranha V as the FRES utility vehicle for the British Army. The company will now enter negotiations with the MoD to determine the scope of development work required.
"General Dynamics UK will develop the Piranha V as the FRES utility vehicle for the British Army."
The development of the Piranha V is being carried out by General Dynamics UK and Mowag of Switzerland (part of the General Dynamics European Land Combat Systems group). The manufacture of the first Piranha V prototype will be completed by the end of 2008 and a schedule is in place to ramp up to production status compatible with the Initial Operational Capability (IOC) date of 2012, with transfer of this capability into the UK to ensure UK sovereign control through-life.
The Piranha V 8x8 is the fifth-generation of the family of Piranha wheeled utility vehicles and is being developed by General Dynamics, using private venture funding, specifically to meet the UK armed forces' FRES requirement.
The Piranha V is a British development of a European design and therefore free of the US Department of Defense International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) restrictions, thus simplifying its transfer into the UK to meet the UK defence industrial strategy objectives.
A large number of Piranha vehicles are currently deployed on operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Since 1996 the Piranha vehicles have been built in 6x6, 8x8 and 10x10 variants and, by the end of 2007, more than 9,000 variants of Piranha vehicles were on order or in service in over 20 nations' armed forces worldwide, including the US Army's Stryker vehicle, a variant of the Piranha III.
In June 2007, the UK MoD announced that the Piranha vehicle was one of three vehicles selected for the FRES utility vehicle 'Trials of Truth'. The Piranha Evolution vehicle was General Dynamics' candidate vehicle in these trials, which were held in 2007 at the MoD's armoured trials and development unit at Bovington. The Piranha Evolution vehicle is an interim design and is the basis for the development of the Piranha V.
The trial of the Piranha Evolution provided a demonstration of the potential of Piranha to meet the FRES threshold requirements and the stretch potential to meet the emerging and future requirements which will develop with the armed forces' evolving operational needs.
General Dynamics UK has established a programme office in Bristol, UK, to provide a focal point for its FRES partnership with industry and the Ministry of Defence. General Dynamics is evaluating a range of options for the manufacture, assembly and test within the UK. This includes an evaluation of existing and new facilities.
PIRANHA V VEHICLE
"The manufacture of the first Piranha V prototype will be completed by the end of 2008."
The main differences between the Piranha V vehicle and the current variants are: higher levels of protection, up-rated drive-train to cater for weight growth, greater internal volume, improved mobility, enhanced power and power management and a modern, open, electronic architecture.
Piranha V has significant additional internal capacity over the existing fleet of vehicles. The additional capacity will ease the burden on stowage and the carriage of supporting weaponry and materiel.
Assisted steering is provided on the two front pairs of wheels and the rear wheels. The wheels are fitted with run flat tyres, a central tyre inflation system and anti-lock braking. The pressure of each tyre is automatically controlled at 30-second intervals. The crew can set the tyre pressure to pre-selected pressures for metalled road, cross country, sandy terrain and for emergency operation, optimising the vehicle for ride and tactical mobility.
The vehicle has the capacity to generate increased electrical power on demand and has an integrated power management system. The power system will accommodate new systems and technologies which are currently under development.
The 28t gross weight meets the MoD's 30t weight envelope for rapid deployment in the A400M transport aircraft.
WEAPONS
Piranha has already demonstrated a broad range of weapon systems mounted on the platform to suit mission requirements: e.g. 12.7mm, 25mm, 30mm or low-recoil 105mm guns, including Rheinmetall Landsysteme weapon station with 12.7mm gun and Delco Systems 25mm and 30mm turrets.
SURVIVABILITY
The Piranha V provides a greatly increased level of protection compared to the earlier Piranha variants. The improvements have benefited from direct experience of Piranha on operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
"The Piranha V 8×8 is the fifth-generation of the family of Piranha wheeled utility vehicles."
The internal and external physical layout of the vehicle, the integrated mine-protected seats and a range of other survivability features are incorporated into the design.
The Piranha designs incorporate shaped hull plates to optimise against blast, spacing in the add-on armour and surface coatings to minimise the thermal and radar signatures.
The modular armour system provides protection against Rocket-Propelled Grenades (RPGs), 14.5mm armour-piercing rounds through 360° and 30mm armour piercing rounds across the 30° frontal arc. The hull provides protection against 8kg anti-tank mines.
Development work has been carried out for the integration of a Hard-Kill Defensive Aids Suite (HK DAS) and protection against Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) on Piranha V.
The Piranha V has the capacity to generate increased power to enable the effective application of selected or developing survivability technologies as they become available, such as hard or soft-kill defensive aid systems or electric armour.
COMMAND AND CONTROL
The Piranha V and its predecessor the Piranha Evolution are fitted with the Bowman secure tactical digital communications system. The voice and data communications system does not require encoding and decoding. A global positioning system processor is integrated into each Bowman radio that updates all the other radios on the network. The system provides fast secure tactical digital communications and enhanced situational awareness with automatic location and navigation reporting.
The Piranha V has a fully integrated FRES utility vehicle electronic architecture. The architecture is integrated with the Battle Command Integration Programme (BCIP), local and on-board situational awareness suite, the Health and Usage Monitoring System (HUMS), the collective protection systems (COLPRO) and the remote weapon station.
ENGINE
The vehicle is powered by an MTU 6V199 TE20 diesel engine, rated at 550hp, with a ZF 7HP 902 seven-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission. The vehicle meets European emissions standards.
"A large number of Piranha vehicles are currently deployed on operations in Iraq and Afghanistan."
The power-to-weight ratio is dependent on the mission configuration and combat weight of the vehicle and is approximately 20hp/t at 28t combat weight and with the TE20 550hp engine.
During the MoD's trials at Bovington in 2007, the power pack was removed, reinstalled and running in less than an hour in an ease-of-maintenance assessme

Intermat
http://www.army-technology.com/contractors/camouflage/intermat
Intermat specialize in special-countermeasure wide-spectrum anti-IR coating materials (400nm - 20000nm) for concealment against thermal observation and deception of heat-seeking missiles. Intermat is widely known for being the only company promoting these state-of-the-art, anti-thermal coating materials that have been developed after many years of R&D.
ANTI-THERMAL / ANTI-IR CAMOUFLAGE COATING MATERIALS
Intermat's anti-thermal / anti-IR coating materials are not just other camouflage paints that you have come across before. They are truly the most advanced technological achievement of electronic / thermal-type camouflage coating materials for all military assets. The fundamental principle regarding the application is perfect thermal concealment, so that assets are unidentifiable by all modern IR sensors and thermal tracking systems.
CAMOUFLAGE YOUR THERMAL SIGNATURE
One of the most commonly used techniques for tracing and scanning is the use of infrared photography that reveals those objects that are hotter than their surrounding environment. By using Intermat coating materials, you can achieve a balance / equalization between the environment's IR signature and the thermal signature of the asset.
As a result, assets cannot be identified by IR or other thermal devices in the near, mid, or far spectrum (sniper scopes, NVGs, thermal-viewers, FLIRs, CVTTS, LANTIRN, LRASSS, laser designators, GPS / INS aided missiles that use IR sensors during final approach, satellites), simply because the asset is not seen or identified as hotter than its environment.
NATO'S STANAG AND IR-THREAT DEFINITION UPDATE
NATO has recently updated its standards with regards to which area of the spectrum a thermal threat is defined at. This information is now registered into NATO's database (up to 12000nm). This is a big step forward from what a thermal threat was perceived to be in the past (spectrum in the region of 1000nm - 1972 specification).
This update on thermal threat definition strengthens the specification of our coating materials, fully protecting you at the wide spectrum of 400nm to 20000nm against all IR threats.
In addition, our advanced-technology coating materials are in full compliance with NATO's Standardization Agreement 4319 under the title 'Counter-Surveillance Requirements for Future Main Battle Tanks - Infrared / Thermal Aspects'.
COATING MATERIALS' CHARACTERISTICS
Coating materials achieve up to 50% IR signature reduction (unique feature internationally)
They can reduce external temperature up to 65%
They are effective in the wide IR spectrum of 400nm to 20000nm
They resemble the assets' thermal signature, with the environment's IR signature
They can be applied on any asset, either mobile, fixed, aerial, naval
Coating materials are passive to the environment and when applied they stay on guard day or night, 365 days per year and for a long time.
BENEFITS OF INTERMAT ANTI-THERMAL CAMOUFLAGE
You adapt to the IR environment of your area
You are protected from thermal threat
Your survivability in a complex and advanced military environment is significantly optimized
You gain a sustainable advantage
Targeting friendly assets is avoided
Coating materials can be used as a permanent countermeasure during day or night, 365 days a year
You can finally do away with traditional and conventional means of concealment that limit mobility, are user-dependent, require valuable resources, and often undermine the secrecy of the plan
With Intermat paints you can make an entire area disappear 365 days a year.
ANTI-THERMAL CREAM FOR SPECIAL FORCES
It is also very important to note that Intermat is constantly evolving this technology. The most recent progress entails PVC painting and the creation of an anti-thermal camouflage cream intended for special forces.
The anti-thermal camouflage cream can be applied on the uncovered part of the body (face, hands), so that the soldier can pass unnoticed, not only at the level of optical camouflage but most importantly being undetected by thermal tracking devices. Tests revealed that normally a soldier could be easily detected at 1,000m, but with Intermat's anti-thermal cream they would have to approach at a distance of about 150m to 200m before they can be exposed.
We believe that we offer the latest development of a unique technology, and although attempts have been made in the past to produce paints with anti-IR properties, these were proven inferior and are already considered obsolete in comparison to what Intermat can now deliver with proven tests and results both at the real-life battlefield and the laboratory.

Port-A-Cool Explosion Proof Units Offer Cooling Alternative
http://www.army-technology.com/contractors/hvac/port-a-cool/press1.html
Offshore drilling rigs are exposed to some of the most severe environments imaginable. High levels of humidity and salt spray must be continually battled to ensure metal surfaces escape corrosion and permanent damage. No matter what the weather brings, rig operators are challenged every day to protect equipment from environmental damage by repairing or applying protective coatings to equipment. In addition to dealing with the weather, rig operators must take the necessary precautions to avoid potential explosions from the hazardous environments where they work.
Hazardous locations are areas where a potential for explosion and fire are a constant threat due to flammable gases, vapors, or finely pulverized dust in the air. Easily ignitable fibers or flyings might also pose a threat for explosion. Hazardous locations may result from the normal processing of certain volatile chemicals, gases, grains, or accidental failure of storage systems for these materials. Whatever the cause, it is necessary that every precaution be taken to guard against ignition of the atmosphere. So, what can a rig operator do to keep workers cool?
The explosion-proof models manufactured by Port-A-Cool portable evaporative cooling units can help rig operators meet this challenge. The 36-inch or 48-inch explosion proof/hazardous location models were specially developed by Port-A-Cool for use on offshore platforms. Electrical components can be a source of ignition for these hazardous location areas, but Port-A-Cool explosion proof models feature sealed switches, cords and motors to prevent sparking and accidental explosion in highly-combustible areas. In addition, the unit housings are rotationally molded and are leak and rust proof, preventing the rust and deterioration found in metal cooling systems.
The 36-inch explosion proof model is a best seller. cools 2,500 square feet and delivers 9,600 CFM. The 48-inch explosion proof model cools a large 4,000 square feet, delivers 17,500 CFM, and comes standard with heavy duty casters for extra mobility. Both models lower the temperature an average of 15 to 25°F.

Heat Stroke
http://www.army-technology.com/contractors/hvac/port-a-cool/press3.html
With summer temperatures steadily climbing into triple digits, the potential for heat stroke becomes a real concern for those exposed to high temperature environments.
"High Temperature Environments," are generally referred to as those over 87°F for light work, over 82°F for moderate work and over 78°F for heavy work. This amount requires 25% rest time for every 75% of work time, according to OSHA, with additional rest times for higher temperature environments. For example, work place temperatures over 86°F require 75% rest time for every 25% of work time when a worker is producing a heavy workload.
According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Center for Disease Control (CDC), the US Department of Health, and the University of Michigan, employees required to work in high temperature environments should be allowed to take frequent breaks in a cool place.
According to OSHA 'rest period' recommendations, if a staff of 100 workers takes ONE additional 10-minute rest period per day, the cost to the company will be 16 hours and 40 minutes in lost production time per day or 83 hours and 20 minutes per week. In terms of dollars, at $18 per hour pay rate, excluding overtime and including benefits, the cost to the company will be US$1,500 per week or US$19,500 over the course of a 13-week summer.
According to these same organizations, high temperature work environments can lead to a variety of heat-illnesses including: heat stroke, heat stress, heat strain, heat collapse, heat cramps, heat exhaustion, heat fatigue and heat rash.
Also according to these groups, if frequent breaks are not taken, workers are at risk of physical symptoms such as nausea, headaches, dizziness, cramps, confusion, unconsciousness, seizure and even death. Mentally, workers can become drowsy, unfocused, moody, and the effects of heat stress have been shown to contribute to accidents, work slowdowns and walkouts, according to the Southwest Michigan Coalition on Safety and Health.
All these groups recommend ventilation as a preventative and some specifically recommend evaporative cooling where available, citing the inefficiency and high cost of installing and operating central air conditioning and the additional benefit of portable evaporative cooling and the ability to direct spot cooling where desired.
Port-A-Cool® portable evaporative cooling units provide fresh cool air and require nothing but tap water and 110v of electricity to operate. Evaporative cooling has also been proven to improve indoor air quality because of the introduction of fresh air and moisture that the unit produces. The energy costs are also lowered by as much as 3/4th when utilizing evaporative cooling.
For providing 100% fresh, cool air for warehouse or shop employees, kennels, poultry houses, gymnasiums, or during outdoor activities, Port-A-Cool units are the only choice.

An Ancient Technique for a High Tech Society
http://www.army-technology.com/contractors/hvac/port-a-cool/press2.html
Remember the chill after swimming on a hot, dry day, then getting out of the water and feeling the wind hitting your wet skin? Or simply try dipping your finger in a glass of water, then blowing air across your finger and feeling the cool sensation as the water evaporates. That's evaporative cooling.
Try the same thing when there is no wind or no air moving. The surrounding air is quickly saturated with moisture, there is no evaporation and the cooling effect is gone.
Evaporative cooling units create this naturally occurring process and provide a constant flow of cool, refreshing air into a hot, uncomfortable environment.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
The heart of an evaporative cooling system is the pad where the water evaporates and the air passing through the pads is cooled.
Evaporative cooling pads, like Kuul pads, are manufactured of fluted cellulose sheets that are glued together. This material is chemically impregnated with special compounds to prevent rot and ensure a long service life.
A special water distribution system spreads water over the surface of the pad, ensuring a uniform supply of water to keep the entire air contact surface thoroughly wetted."
Fans create a negative pressure, causing air to be drawn through the pads.
Evaporation results from contact between air and water. A control system operates the water pump and the fan distributes the cool air.
The relative humidity is lowest in the afternoon when the temperature is at its highest. And the lower the humidity, the better the evaporative cooling effect. In other words, the cooling effect is best when you need it the most.
EVAPORATIVE COOLING VS TRADITIONAL AIR CONDITIONING
Evaporative coolers and central air conditioners both serve the same important purpose: keeping us cool. But these two systems operate very differently. Understanding the difference can help get the most out of any system and minimize wasted energy.
Evaporative coolers cool air by filtering it through water, thus lowering the air's temperature. Evaporative coolers produce humid air because the air absorbs water during the cooling process. These systems work best when a small amount of outside air circulates into the space where the evaporative cooler is employed. This also introduces fresh air into the environment and reduces the risk of poor indoor air quality.
Central air conditioners, on the other hand, work by taking humidity out of the home. These systems produce cold, dry air and work best in an airtight home.
The major advantage of an evaporative cooler is that its operating costs are typically one-third those of a central air conditioner. The initial equipment cost is also lower than air conditioners. Along with lower operating costs and simple installation, evaporative cooling can be a perfect, ozone-friendly alternative to traditional air conditioning.
IS IT GOOD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT?
Refrigerated cooling makes the air dry and uses refrigerants, which may harm the environment. Evaporative cooling, however, is based on a totally natural process of air cooled by water which means it won't dry out the air, irritate your skin, throat or eyes, or affect the environment.
Evaporative cooling is the healthiest way to cool because it replaces stale air with clean, fresh air many times an hour - remember, you keep your doors and windows open. The air is never re-circulated which means smells and airborne germs are expelled.
WILL IT SAVE ME MONEY?
Evaporative cooling is also up to 50% cheaper to install and three times cheaper to run than refrigerated cooling. Typically, the cost for water and electricity for a 36in unit for eight hours of operation is less than US$1.00. Smaller units will operate for longer periods for the same amount of money.
That's approximately three times cheaper than traditional air conditioning.
EVAPORATIVE COOLING AND HEAT STRESS
Heat stress can occur in people, animals and even equipment. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and other agencies, employees required to work in high temperature environments should be allowed frequent breaks in a cool place to avoid symptoms of heat stress including nausea, dizziness, cramps, confusion, unconsciousness, seizure and even death. High temperature environments are generally referred to as those over 87°F for light work, over 82°F for moderate work and over 78°F for heavy work.
According to the "Journal of Dairy Science", across all animal classes, the estimated national annual losses to heat stress are estimated at US$2.4 billion. In cattle, heat stress reduces fertility and milk production in cows and can cause udder infections and even mortality during the hot summer months. Heat stress is also to blame for a high percentage of piglet and poultry mortality.
Evaporative cooling units, like Port-A-Cool, can lower the ambient temperature 15 to 25°F, turning a restrictive 90°F area into a comfortable 70°F area.

This purchase will enable Peli Products to expand its presence in Europe, Middle East and Africa while continuing to develop new products and technologies.
The acquisition of Blue i complements Peli Products strategic vision to position the company as the pioneer in new lighting technology, and further supports the company's leadership position in the global lighting technology market.
In 2003 the company revolutionised the lighting industry with the creation of Recoil LED technology. Now, through the acquisition of Blue i, Peli Products takes a further step towards the launch of its Advanced Area Lighting Group (AALG), a new line of products bringing next generation Area Lighting Technology to market.
The Advanced Area Lighting Group will drive primary R&D to bring portable, powerful, energy-efficient and environmentally responsible lighting technology to remote area applications.
"More than three decades ago Peli Products pioneered an entirely new industry for protective case design and manufacture and is still recognized today as the global leader," said Lyndon Faulkner, president and CEO of Peli Products.
"We are taking that same pioneering spirit to become the leader in designing and building the most advanced environmentally safe and energy-efficient lighting technology on the market. The lighting industry hasn't even scratched the surface in
effectively integrating LED technology into commercial applications for lighting large areas - that is the sole focus of the AALG and the major reason we have acquired Blue i."
Through the acquisition of Blue i UK, Peli Products will be manufacturing in the UK for the first time. Blue i UK is a leading-edge designer and manufacturer of maintenance free portable lighting products with a recognised tradition of innovation and award winning products and services. Their expertise in LED technology and cordless portable technology is an ideal addition to Peli(TM) Products AALG.
Blue i founders, Neil Walker and Darren Judd, were recognized last year for Blue i's success as a finalist for HSBC's annual: "Start-up Stars" Awards in the UK for new and growing
