Bose Corporation
http://www.army-technology.com/contractors/navigation/bose-corporation
In 1978 Dr. Amar Bose had an inspiration during a noisy international airline flight. At that time, electronic headphones to enhance passenger entertainment were replacing older pneumatic tube phones. Unfortunately the fidelity improvements were masked by cabin noise and distortion-the latter resulting from passengers increasing the volume setting to overcome background noise. Dr. Bose believed it was possible to achieve noise reduction in headphones by means of a closed loop feedback control.

Dr. Bose quickly initiated a research program to study the array of complex acoustic, electronic and mechanical challenges to practical active noise cancellation headsets. This research eventually led to the development of Bose® consumer headphones and military headsets. The Bose Product Improved Combat Vehicle Crewman (PICVC) headset and the TriPort® Tactical Headset (TTH) are currently used by the US Army and other military forces around the world.

NOISE REDUCTION + CLEARER AUDIO + COMFORTABLE FIT = INCREASED MISSION EFFECTIVENESS

The US Department of Defense considers 85dBA SPL as the maximum safe level for continuous noise over an eight-hour period, assuming a 16-hour quiet recovery period. And removal of a headset for even 15 minutes in a 95dBA SPL environment can cut the allowable exposure time in half. Even relatively brief noise exposure can induce short-term hearing loss, while long-duration operations can induce fatigue and permanent hearing loss.

To help reduce noise, conventional headsets rely on large earcups with heavy weight and tight clamping force. The result is often a headset soldiers don't want to wear for extended periods. But proprietary Bose technologies overcome the noise reduction vs. comfort compromise.

Bose military headsets offer active and passive technologies which together provide full-spectrum noise reduction with comfortable, lightweight designs that can be worn continuously during long missions. Bose active noise reduction enables lighter headset design and lower clamping force than typical conventional headsets.

High noise levels in military vehicles also affect situational awareness. Misunderstood commands and repeated instructions can increase operational risk and reduce mission effectiveness. Bose proprietary Acoustic Noise Cancelling® headset technology effectively reduces the low-frequency noise prevalent in modern military vehicles, while faithfully reproducing audio signals provided by the vehicle intercom system. In fact, US Army tests have demonstrated that use of Bose Acoustic Noise Cancelling headsets resulted in a 21% increase in voice intelligibility when compared with a conventional headset.

PRODUCT IMPROVED COMBAT VEHICLE CREWMAN (PICVC) HEADSET

The PICVC headset is our second generation Acoustic Noise Cancelling communications headset solution for military operations. It's designed to address the needs of tracked armored vehicles like the Bradley Fighting Vehicle, where noise levels can greatly exceed 103dBA SPL. The headset is integrated with the standard US military helmet liner and the DH-132A/B CVC hardshell.

TRIPORT TACTICAL HEADSET (TTH)

In 2004 Bose introduced the TriPort Tactical Headset (TTH) for use in wheeled vehicles. Tactical wheeled vehicles such as the HMMWV, while not as loud as tracked vehicles, may have noise levels of 95dBA SPL or higher-levels that can damage hearing and degrade communications.

Like the Bose PICVC, the TTH features our Acoustic Noise Cancelling headphone technology to dramatically reduce these noise levels. It fits under infantry ballistic helmets such as the ACH, and it's lighter, smaller and has less clamping force than many other tactical headsets. The TTH also features our proprietary TriPort acoustic headphone structure to help maintain clearer audio communications in real-world military conditions.

Please contact Bose to discuss your application and determine if our products are appropriate for your needs.

Siemens
http://www.army-technology.com/contractors/nbc/siemens
Based in Dorset, UK, Siemens Radiation Monitoring provides radiation detection and monitoring system solutions for the military, peace keeping, security and civil sectors to the international market.

Our detection systems are designed for use on vehicles, ships and submarines and for both local and wide area radiation monitoring networks. We design, develop, manufacture and support all our radiation detection systems including the NATO codified ANV S2 vehicle systems, the UK Radiation Incident Monitoring Network (RIMNET) and installed dockyard and command centre systems.

ANV S2 RADIATION MONITORING SYSTEMS

The Siemens ANV S2 system is a modular design which enables the user to specify a configuration to suit operational deployments and platform requirements. ANV S2 radiation monitoring systems are available as both vehicle and naval (ship-installed) systems.

The ANV S2 fighting vehicle system provides a continuous visual display of gamma dose rates, accumulated dose and associated alarms for the vehicle commander and their crew. System integrity is continuously monitored and any faults immediately indicated. A dataport is provided to interface with platform management systems providing comprehensive data in a standard format for on-board processing and, where appropriate, for radio relay to a command centre.

The ANV S2 systems have been designed to meet the full rigours of operational deployments. The systems have successfully completed type testing to UK defence standards which included wheeled and tracked vehicle levels of shock, vibration and electro-magnetic compatibility together with temperature, humidity and nuclear survivability.

Independent assessment of our detecting unit has predicted a Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) of approaching 15 years providing assured operation throughout extended deployments. Both the vehicle and the ship installed ANV S2 systems incorporate the same proven and rugged technologies and materials which provide the extended MTBF performance.

FIGHTING VEHICLE RADIATION DETECTION SYSTEMS

The fighting vehicle radiation detection system, ANV S2 FV, has successfully completed a Technical Demonstrator Project (TDP) sponsored by the UK MoD. The system was installed on a Spartan tracked vehicle and its performance assessed over a period of several weeks. Drive-by point source detection and low-level detection trials were completed to confirm the ANV S2 system's sensitivity and responsiveness to low-level transient radiation events.

Its modular design, product specification and options make it suitable for both civil and military applications. Typical systems comprise two or three wide-range detectors and a control unit (or control display unit). An optional remote unit can also be fitted to a vehicle.

Organisations using Siemens Radiation Monitoring systems currently include:

Military forces

Special forces

Police

Ambulance services

Fire services

Border security

Radiation Monitoring is a member of NBC (UK) and has accreditation for quality management systems to BS EN ISO 9001:2000 and for environmental management systems to BS EN ISO 14001:2004. We are an approved supplier to the UK Ministry of Defence with over 50 years experience of supplying radiation detection and monitoring systems to the military and to the nuclear power industry.

Sandisk Launches Solid-State Drives for Ultra Low-Cost PC's
http://www.army-technology.com/contractors/data_recording/reactive/press9.html
SanDisk Corporation today introduced a line of flash memory-based solid-state drives (SSDs) that are designed for an emerging new category of portable consumer electronics - called Ultra Low-Cost PCs (ULCPC) or “netbooks” - that allow users to have an enhanced experience while easily surfing the Internet using wireless communication. The SanDisk pSSD (Parallel ATA solid state drive) eliminates the need for a hard disk drive and can store both the operating system and application data for these new devices.

A pioneer in developing SSDs for laptop computers, tablet PCs and blade servers, SanDisk is making the new SSD modules available in 4-, 8- and 16-gigabyte (GB)1 capacities, with a streaming read speed of 39 megabytes per second (MB/s)2 and a streaming write performance of 17MB/s.2 Supporting both Linux and Microsoft Windows XP operating systems, SanDisk pSSD solid state drives are being shown this week at Computex Taipei, where SanDisk is exhibiting at Booth M320 in Nangang Exhibition Hall.

SanDisk's pSSD solid state drives, which are expected to be available starting in August, are built using the company's reliable Multi-Level Cell (MLC) and Single-Level Cell (SLC) flash memory. This technology is produced at fabrication plants in Yokkaichi, Japan, where SanDisk and its partner, Toshiba Corporation, share the output. The two companies have co-developed many of the designs and technologies in NAND flash.

ULCPCs are inexpensive handheld laptops - smaller than a conventional notebook computer but larger than a mobile 'smart' phone - that are easy to carry and cost in the range of US$250 to US$350. They enable consumers to browse the Internet on the go, with a user interface that replicates that of larger PCs. Originally, ULCPCs were developed as low-cost computing solutions for school children in developing nations. But the diminutive devices have caught on with adults, and now manufacturers are rolling out devices that are designed for general consumer use.

"We're excited to be involved in this emerging market of ULCPCs, which take the concept of affordability into new directions - ones that are ideally suited to the multiple benefits of SanDisk's technology," said Rich Heye, Senior Vice President and General Manager at SanDisk's Solid State Drives (SSD) Business Unit. “Based on consumer response to some of the first ULCPCs, these devices are quickly developing a popular following. Our new pSSDs are enablers for manufacturers to create what could become the next wave of personal and portable computing devices."

According to Joseph Unsworth, Research Director at Gartner: "The opportunity for SSDs in the emerging market of ultra low-cost PCs is promising." Gartner expects the low-cost SSD category to grow from 635,000 units in 2007 to over 33 million units in 2012, and that represents a five-year compound growth rate of 117 percent. "As semiconductor innovation enables more powerful functionality at lower prices, storage requirements will continue to be elastic, providing opportunities for companies that can command compelling low-cost SSD solutions," said Unsworth.

The ULCPC category includes devices that exclusively use solid state drives, rather than conventional hard disk drives, for the system volume. The devices require small form factor and low power consumption, thus providing a good user experience and a full day's work on a single battery charge. In addition to providing affordable computing solutions, these PCs are designed to withstand the heat, dust, humidity and unreliable power that can impact performance. Thus, ULCPCs leverage the main advantages of flash-based SSDs including reliability, power consumption, form factor and cost.

SanDisk Corporation, the inventor and world's largest supplier of flash storage cards, is a global leader in flash memory - from research, manufacturing and product design to consumer branding and retail distribution. SanDisk's product portfolio includes flash memory cards for mobile phones, digital cameras and camcorders; digital audio/video players; USB flash drives for consumers and the enterprise; embedded memory for mobile devices; and solid state drives for computers. SANDISK CRUZER Encrypted USB
http://www.army-technology.com/contractors/data_recording/reactive/press8.html
SANDISK's "Cruzer" USB secure memory stick product with 256bit AES hardware encryption (literature and pricing on request) is now certified to the FIPS 140-2 standard.

The "Cruzer" is ideal for storing sensitive data and protecting organisations against the security implications of device loss or theft. It has all the benefits of a primary hardware encryption solution, whilst providing central control of device allocation, access, and tracking with our optional server based CMC software. The CMC product also integrates well with industry standard port control software.

The "Cruzer" is fast and available in capacities up to 8GB. The Enterprise version forces the use of a complex password, and will be of interest to your customers, administrators, project managers and senior engineers that must work with sensitive data off-site and to those responsible for your IT security.

The use of the "Cruzer" should end the threat of 'embarrassing' headlines once and for all. We expect to be able to offer further secure versions of SANDISK's Solid State Disk (SSD) product range for embedded laptop and mobile tablet computer use, but this is only one reason to consider the use of SSD's to replace hard disks: SANDISK's SSD 5000 series SSD products are superior to hard disks (HDD) in all the criteria now important in all critical applications, namely:

Reduced power requirement by a factor of 2.5 over an equivalent HDD (20/30 minutes extended laptop battery life - a green solution) Improved speed (seek time and data transfer rate) two times the speed of 7200 rpm Seagate HDD; 65 times the IOPS (Vista OS) Maximum product life (up to 30 years and at least three times the life of an HDD), no "Blue Screen of Death" failures Enhanced reliability (2,000,000 hr MTBF; seven times the true MTBF of hard disk drives). Environmental tolerance (three temperature grades to full Mil-std 810F -40deg to +85degC operating). Minimum 30% wider temperature range than HDDs

Rugged, 1,000G versus 250G for a typical HDD Addition features include:

Lower cost of ownership in critical applications Embedded 20 second irrevocable security erase and seven selectable sanitisation, declassification protocols ("Classic" product range only)

Totally silent operation

Altitude independent (no flying heads) The SANDISK SSD5000 UATA (PATA) and SATA product range for rugged laptops is used by DELL, HP, and IBM, and approved by Microsoft WHQL for Vista. The new CF5000 industrial grade fast compact flash device may be used with our latest reactive SCSI-1 and SCSI-2 hard disk emulator (bridge to flash), for upgrading critical legacy defence systems that depend on unreliable and often obsolete tape and rotating magnetic disk drives.

Reactive provide dedicated high performance data storage solutions to primary defence contractors and government agencies with unique applications. These solutions range from the most advanced solid state disk products and subsystems for both airborne and rugged, reliable portable computing use, to the support of critical legacy defence systems with enhanced tape and disk drive hardware emulators. We are the SanDisk UK distributors to the defence and government sectors, but also offer other “best of breed” SSD products.

ADVANCED PRODUCTS

SANDISK's high performance, low cost, Solid-State Disk (SSD) products replace 1.8in, 2.5in and 3.5in conventional IDE+, PATA, SATA, USB and CF disk drives on a form, fit and function basis. No special software drivers are required and the products provide tolerance to harsh environments (many up to Mil-Std 810-F), together with lower weight and power consumption. The products offer totally silent operation, very high reliability and up to five-year warranty. The "Classic" mSSD/FFD products also feature built-in (20 second or 5 second) security erase, and selectable sanitisation (declassification) protocols approved by the NSA, DOD, IRIG and other bodies.

The embedded, patented, TFFS protocol on our Flash SSD products provides a 30+ year product life not possible with conventional Flash wear levelling protocols. High sustained W/R transfer rates make our PATA (UATA) and SATA products amongst the fastest SSDs available in classic disk form factors. Selected by BAE, SAAB, Thales, Ultra, SELEX, DRS, EDS, Ultra, Qinetiq and many others, our products have become widely used for airborne reconnaissance and mission memory and may be adapted to emulate magnetic tape units or earlier conventional SCSI-1, SCSI-2 disks.

DEDICATED SYSTEMS SUPPORT

Our standard legacy disk and tape drive hardware emulators are based on hard disk, hybrid and full solid state technologies and replace data storage devices (disk, tape, etc,) that are now difficult to repair or source, or are found unsuitable for the targeted application. We also supply the associated consultancy, dedicated design, and system integration services, to help in those cases where the best solution involves the matching of existing legacy system interfaces to the more future-proof and advanced interfaces common to modern data storage products.

To support our customers that rely on the obsolete SASI/SCSI-1 interfaces we have developed a SCSI/SCSI bridge product with programmable interface characteristics that allows our high performance FFDs to be interfaced to legacy host systems without software change. For low capacities, up to 16GB, the Reactive SCSI bridge product is available to accept our industrial grade, SLC compact flash 5000 devices and fits within the original 3.5in disk footprint.

At the extreme high performance end, our fibre connected "TMS", solid state disk products allow data rates as high as 350MBytes/second over multiple 4GB/s host channels (Over 400,000 IOPS). These products provide high transfer rates and unbeatable IOPS irrespective of record length, as a cost efficient alternative to RAID, where bandwidth is more critical than capacity (e.g., code and image recognition). The "TMS 500" system is the fastest memory product currently in manufacture.

Both the BAC20 and BAC60 assault rafts use the highly reliable and cost effective technology of the PFM. They can be deployed within minutes under any bank conditions.

PFM SIR ASSAULT BRIDGE

The PFM SIR assault bridge is an improvement of the PFM floating bridge. Its modularity allows the military commander to build any combination of rafts or MLC70 bridges, and switch from one mode to the other within minutes, depending on operational conditions. A centralized command (new feature) makes the PFM SIR assualt bridge one of the most crew effective systems available today.

The PFM SIR assault bridge is currently being delivered to an Asian army. CLEAR SPAN BRIDGES - PAR 70 SUPPORT BRIDGE The PAR 70 support bridge is a rapid deployment, MLC 70 towed support bridge. It is transported, launched and retrieved by a dedicated semi-trailer with no additional equipment required. The prime mover is the client's choice upon specification. Mobility is excellent thanks to the overall reduced weight of the system and the AWD device of the semi-trailer (in option).

The bridge is 19.5m long with a trackway of 4m wide and weighs 9,000kg. It can be deployed within three minutes by a crew of three. A pipe-line crossing version is also available.

The bridge itself is in service with the French Army. Its launching device is an improvement of an existing device, also in service with the French Army.

PAR 70 support bridge can be adapted on any existing AVLB in order to upgrade it to MLC 70.

CLEAR SPAN BRIDGES - PTA MODULAR ASSAULT BRIDGE

The PTA is a MLC 70 modular assault bridge, whose length is adjusted by the crew according to the width of the gap. It comes in two versions:

PTA2: one vehicle can launch two 14.3m bridges or one 26m bridge before replenishment PTA3: one vehicle can launch three 10.5m bridges, or one 10.5m plus one 18.7m bridges, or one 27m long bridge

These systems offer an excellent operational flexibility as well as an unmatched life cycle cost. Both use the same 10x10 wheeled chassis, which offers state of the art tactical and strategic mobility.

Operation, launching and retrieving is fully automated. The system is operated by a crew of two under armour.

Development and initial production of the PTA modualr assault bridges is under progress for the French Army.

Aimpoint's Smallest Tactical Sight
http://www.army-technology.com/contractors/machine_guns/aimpoint/press14.html
In response to the need for smaller and lighter tactical sights, Aimpoint proudly introduced earlier this year the new Aimpoint Micro T-1 electronic red-dot sight. Built to offer the same battle-proven ruggedness as larger Aimpoint sights, the Micro T-1 sight is able to perform under extreme conditions while adding negligible weight to your weapon.

This new compact sight is suitable for use on rifles, carbines, shotguns, submachineguns and handguns. The Aimpoint Micro T-1 sight is ideal as a stand-alone sight, and can also be piggybacked on top of larger magnifying scopes, night vision, or thermal imaging optics.

The Micro T-1 weighs in at only 105 g. (3.7 oz.), and comes complete with a patent-pending integral Picatinny mount that is keyed into the sight body to absorb recoil. The Aimpoint Micro T-1 is a 1X (non magnifying) parallax-free optic that features a 4 minutes of angle (MOA) red dot for fast target acquisition. No tools are required to zero the sight, as the top of the caps covering the windage and elevation screws fit directly into holes on the adjustment screws to make the adjustment.

The Micro T-1 sight is waterproof to 25 meters (80 feet) and tough enough to stand up to the worst field conditions. Optimized for use with all generations of night vision devices, the Aimpoint Micro T-1 sight features a manual adjustment switch with 6 night vision compatible settings and 7 daylight settings (including one extra bright setting for use in desert sunlight or with laser protection filters).

Aimpoint s state-of-the-art ACET diode technology allows the Micro T-1 sight to operate continuously for over 5 years on a single CR-2032 battery. The Aimpoint Micro T-1 is a very exciting tactical optic not just because of its small size, but also due to its extreme versatility said Aimpoint President Lennart Ljungfelt.

Not only is the Micro T-1 a full-featured stand-alone combat optic, it can also be mounted on top of other magnifying optics, giving the operator dual capabilities to engage targets in a CQB situation as well as at longer ranges. Now, everyone can have the speed advantage of a red dot sight, no matter what type of weapon or primary optic they are carrying.
