EA Hypes Spore with Teaser 'Creature Creator'
http://www.newsfactor.com/story.xhtml?story_id=60325
Electronic Arts is daring gamers to test the limits of their imagination with the latest game debut from its Maxis studio.

On Tuesday, EA released Spore Creature Creator. Noteworthy is the fact that Spore Creature Creator is not a full game in itself, but rather an introduction to the highly anticipated video game called Spore that will ship globally in September.

Spore comes from the creators of The Sims. The game will give players their own personal universe in a box. Players, in essence, enter a virtual world where they can create and evolve life, establish tribes, build civilizations, sculpt entire worlds, and explore a universe filled with creations made by other gamers. Spore gives players creative tools to customize nearly every aspect of their universe: creatures, vehicles, buildings and even UFOs.

"Today is the day we begin to see Spore come to life," said Lucy Bradshaw, executive producer and general manager at Maxis. "We're excited to see what players will do with the powerful and intuitive creativity tools we've put into the Spore Creature Creator."

Spore Creatures Get Social

Spore Creature Creator is available now for both PC and Mac. This is a stand-alone product that EA is calling a "creativity toy box" that lets players create their own unique creatures, bring them to life with animations, and share them online with friends around the world.

The Spore Creature Creator lets players take their creatures on a test drive, snap pictures, and make movies of them. Clicking one button lets players share pictures or videos with friends. Players can also share their creations with others by uploading to the "Sporepedia" at the game's Web site. The Sporepedia is an online destination where people worldwide can search for and share Spore creations, comment on other players' designs, and check out celebrity creature creations.

Facebook Enlists Websense for Neighborhood Watch
http://www.technewsworld.com/rsstory/73416.html
Facebook, long a darling of cybercriminals looking to lure in unsuspecting cybersocializers, has partnered with content security vendor Websense to help protect members from links that lead to malware and malicious sites. That may prove good news to corporations, where many IT managers consider employees' use of social media a security threat but where few of them do much about it, a global survey by the Ponemon Institute has found. In other security news, experts are suggesting an alternative to the security certificate, which cybercriminals have shown to be an imperfect safeguard.

http://www.technewsworld.com/rsstory/66870.html
Second Life is getting a little less steamy for people who want to use the virtual world for a myriad of PG-rated experiences, such as taking classes, prototyping buildings or designing virtual goods. For those who don't, Second Life is moving adult-oriented content to a new, X-rated "continent" so they can continue to frolic as their hearts desire. Linden Lab, the company behind Second Life, announced the changes Wednesday as part of a broader move to let users customize the site's content.

Long live the Internet, and the new political landscape it has produced! Things will never be the same again, that's for sure. Zeroing in on the Linux blogs, more repercussions could be felt as bloggers wondered whether Obama would usher in a new, more open type of government.

Admins Locked Out of San Francisco's I.T. System
http://www.newsfactor.com/story.xhtml?story_id=60835
San Francisco's computer network was still being held hostage Thursday, allegedly by a disgruntled employee who programmed the system with a password only he knows. Terry Childs, 43, was jailed Sunday night. He has a 25-year-old criminal record in Kansas for aggravated robbery that had been disclosed at the time he was hired.

No Administrator Access

San Francisco's IT department was trying to regain control of the network, which was running and handling everything from the mayor's e-mail to San Francisco's electronic court records. Currently all IT administrators are denied access.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Mayor Gavin Newsom said administrators were blocked from making changes to the city's computer network, so if the system were to crash, workers could not undertake repairs or upgrades.

Cisco Systems has been consulted, and estimates are that in the worst case, the network could be rebuilt from scratch in six to eight weeks. Childs could be liable for the costs.

Not Guilty Plea

Childs pleaded not guilty Thursday to four counts of tampering with a computer network. His lawyer, public defender Mark Jacobs, said his client's $5 million bail was inappropriate. But city prosecutors said the bail is high because Childs endangered public safety.

Childs could be stripped of his public defender, since there might be a conflict of interest because the defender's office is part of the city and county of San Francisco.

Officials searched Childs' car and home, concerned he may have given the access code to an accomplice who could have destroyed hundreds of thousands of sensitive documents. No evidence was found to suggest a collaborator.

Motive Unknown

According to city officials, on June 20 Childs began photographing the new head of security for the city's technology department after she announced an audit of access to the system. According to authorities, she believed Childs had given himself exclusive access...

Mac Bloggers Chatter Over Chipsets, Bemoan MobileMe, Jerk Geniuses' Chains
http://www.technewsworld.com/rsstory/64014.html
Two major stories have been unfolding throughout the Apple blogosphere this week -- the service outages surrounding the launch of Apple's .Mac replacement, MobileMe, and the rumor that Apple could be ready to cut up Intel's chipsets in favor of something else entirely when it releases its next generation of MacBooks. Plus, not everyone is happy with the iPhone's proprietary nature. E-mail was up in the air for weeks for 20,000 of Apple's .Mac-to-MobileMe subscribers.

WTC Memorial Guide of Names Debuts as iPhone App
http://www.newsfactor.com/story.xhtml?story_id=79928
The arrangement of nearly 3,000 names at the World Trade Center memorial is now available as a free iPhone app, memorial officials said Wednesday.

The guide to the names, which includes biographical information about the victims and pinpoints the location of each name at the memorial, was placed online in May. It will be available on electronic kiosks when the memorial opens next month, on the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

Joe Daniels, president and CEO of the National September 11 Memorial and Museum, briefed reporters about progress at the site during a New York Press Club tour that also featured a talk by trade center developer Larry Silverstein.

A public service announcement about the 2001 terror attacks will air on local TV stations starting Thursday, Daniels said. The PSAs star downtown Manhattan residents, including actor Robert De Niro, as well as victims' family members and first responders.

The memorial designed by Michael Arad features cascading waterfalls in the footprints of the towers surrounded by bronze parapets bearing the names. It opens to family members on Sept. 11 and to the general public on Sept. 12. Passes can be reserved online.

A museum housing thousands of artifacts from the attacks will open in 2012. Daniels previewed one item from the collection: photos and a radio transmission from astronaut Frank Culbertson, the only American in orbit on Sept. 11, 2001. Plumes of smoke arising from lower Manhattan are clearly visible in the images Culbertson shot from the International Space Station.

Silverstein, the developer who had just leased the twin towers when they were destroyed, said that despite the still-sputtering economy, he is confident that the new office towers planned for the site will all be built.

"I have no concern about our ability to get these buildings built and them leased and get them financed,"...

Scowling Birds, Smashed Pigs, Good Times
http://www.technewsworld.com/rsstory/70219.html
Every time I've visited the App Store in the last few weeks, I've seen the same game at the top of the most popular paid apps list: "Angry Birds." Reluctant to presume humanity generally skews toward anything other than the lowest common denominator, I wrote the game off as some scatological exercise in dive-bombing techniques. This week I finally broke and paid it a bit of attention. It's the top paid app in over two dozen countries, it's a buck, it's received over 50,000 five-star reviews, and the icon doesn't look like the worst slap-dash clip-art job I've ever seen.
