Boeing and the US Army's Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) jointly developed the OLS software, which uses satellite imagery, digital terrain elevation data, and Air Force Weather Agency data to help find suitable landing sites for aircraft.

Ellen Pawlikowski became the new commander of the Air Force Research Laboratory at a change-of-command ceremony in the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force on Feb. 12. She replaced Maj. Gen. Curtis Bedke, the AFRL commander for more than two years. Bedke also received the Legion of Merit upon his retirement after more than 30 years of Air Force service.
