Making Progress by Making Peace
http://www.technewsworld.com/rsstory/62360.html
Too many of us -- and I include myself -- are too willing to go to war and not willing enough to find harder, but often more successful, collaborative ways to solve problems. I often look at both the U.S. and Microsoft as similar entities in their respective spaces, and I'm often fascinated by how examples of good and bad judgment can be applied to both.

Laptop Lockdown: How to Secure the Data Vaults
http://www.technewsworld.com/rsstory/62362.html
There are few greater hassles for computer users than the loss of a laptop -- whether it was stolen from the airplane or left lying in a bus. Yet in many cases, the data contained in the machine is considered more valuable than the computer itself. One way to ease these concerns is to take steps to make data inaccessible to third parties.

No More Punching In, Yet Workers Unhappy
http://www.technewsworld.com/rsstory/62358.html
Some workers are doing it at Dunkin' Donuts, at Hilton hotels, even at Marine Corps bases. Employees at a growing number of businesses are starting and ending their days by pressing a hand or finger to a scanner that logs the precise time of their arrival and departure -- information that is automatically reflected in payroll records.

Teach a Man to Phish and He'll Feed on Fools for a Lifetime
http://www.technewsworld.com/rsstory/62357.html
Phishing is a tactic known to malicious hackers ever since the first one crawled out of a swamp and onto dry land. It's another variation on social engineering. The phisher's goal is to get people to open themselves up to technical vulnerabilities through nontechnical means. However, even though most e-mail users have become more savvy about obvious scams, phishing is evolving.

Database Engine Flaw Makes Word Attachments Dangerous
http://www.technewsworld.com/rsstory/62280.html
Don't open that Word file attached to your e-mail; it might contain malware. And don't click on that e-mail or Web site links from strangers. Heck, don't even open Word e-mail attachments from trusted sources unless you're expecting them. Tech and the Recession: Less Green All Around
http://www.technewsworld.com/rsstory/62252.html
I was working on two things last week. One was the impact of the recession on the tech market and what would likely happen to tech spending; and the second was the release of Windows Vista SP1, which I've been using for several months on a number of machines. On the recession side, I've been particularly focused on what is likely to be an adverse impact on some, but not all, "green" initiatives.

Social Security, Social Anxiety
http://www.technewsworld.com/rsstory/62167.html
Having your private information leaked is bad enough, but having it put on BitTorrent is really the final insult. It happened before with MySpace photos. By most accounts, the private images made available earlier this year via peer-to-peer networks consisted mostly of poorly snapped photos of people you didn't know getting drunk at parties you weren't at.
