Aggressive Antipiracy Firm Snags Dolphin in Tuna Net
http://www.technewsworld.com/rsstory/63221.html
Revision3, an entertainment network for the Web, had planned to release its two most popular shows last Friday evening in time for the Memorial Day weekend. Instead, chaos struck, and the Web 2.0 company found itself unable distribute videos or advertising or respond to clients' requests. Even its internal e-mail servers were brought down. The source of the IT meltdown, Revision3 eventually discovered, was a denial of service attack launched by MediaDefender, a company commissioned by the entertainment industry to stop illegal trading of copyrighted content on the Internet.

Better Tech Support in 3 Easy Steps, Part 1
http://www.technewsworld.com/rsstory/63176.html
I have been managing the technical support team at Journyx, a timesheet software company, for about 7 years. When I began, we were hemorrhaging angry customers, but now we haven't received a legitimate customer complaint in years. Since my experience was in sales and retail management, the first thing I did was ask the CEO and VP of sales what they wanted from the tech support team. One of them said, "I'm tired of getting yelled at by customers," and the other said, "I'm tired of seeing the salespeople doing technical support instead of selling."

Apple Gives Leopard a Good Brushing
http://www.technewsworld.com/rsstory/63214.html
Apple has completed a major security overhaul of its Leopard operating system. The fix addresses more than 40 crucial security flaws, including one in iCal that allows hackers to attack the computer remotely. Plugging the iCal hole was the most immediate need Apple had to address. Besides the iCal flaw, the patch addresses collaborative functions that could be used as vectors for attack. Security Update 2008-003 also has a non-security function: It enables iPhone users to sync Mac address book contacts with Google contacts.

Next Wireless Spectrum Sale Likely to Come With a Catch
http://www.technewsworld.com/rsstory/63218.html
Fresh off an ambitious wireless spectrum auction that could help create a new marketplace for high-speed wireless services, the Federal Communications Commission will soon consider another auction with a significant twist that could help close the digital divide. The new spectrum sale would come with the requirement that the winning bidder offer free wireless high-speed Internet access nationwide on the frequency. The FCC will take up the proposal at its upcoming meeting on June 12, according to spokesperson Chelsea Fallon.

The Secret Belgian News, Android Talent Show, Giving Away Money
http://www.technewsworld.com/rsstory/63209.html
The Belgian newspaper group Copiepresse, which won a court ruling last year against Google for linking to its stories without permission, is now asking a court to award it up to $77 million in damages. It is also asking the court to force Google to publish the ruling against its linking practice in a conspicuous place on one of its Web sites for at least 20 days. Google has already stopped linking to the newspapers' content through its Google News site and reached an agreement last year that would allow some content to be accessible through the main search engine.

Genetic Info Law: A Civil Rights Victory?
http://www.technewsworld.com/rsstory/63175.html
Last week, President Bush signed into law the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act, or GINA, which will protect individuals from employer and insurance discrimination based on the results of high-tech gene tests. Fighting discrimination is a good idea, but the lack of opposition to GINA points to some potentially serious problems. GINA passed the Senate unanimously and the House by a margin of 414-to-1, with Ron Paul, a Texas Republican, the lone dissenter.

Mac Bloggers Investigate iPhone Design, Talk Trade-Ins, Sew Up Security
http://www.technewsworld.com/rsstory/63204.html
In Apple news this week, the iPhone frenzy continues ... or perhaps it's just getting started. The company continues to snag partners left and right all over the globe ahead of the next-generation 3G iPhone, which a lot of Apple watchers predict will be announced June 9 at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco. Predictions, tidbit news and iPhone sleuthing are all over the blogosphere. Meanwhile, Apple is still a computer company, too -- the Mac maker released OS X 10.5.3, the latest update to its Leopard operating system.

Sony Rolly: Big Price for a Little Amusement
http://www.technewsworld.com/rsstory/63206.html
For years, Sony has been scrambling to regain its position at the leading edge of music players. Now, that scrambling has produced an egg -- a $399 dancing egg that flashes, rolls and flaps its plastic flippers to the beat. Before you think the Walkman pioneer has finally cracked, it's worth noting that the Rolly is an amusing and somewhat educational robot whose moves can be programed using a PC. And the gadget certainly is a conversation-starter if your dancing hamster has run off. Even if you need a robotic egg to be the life of a party, though, it's hard to justify shelling out $400.

Voting 2.0, Part 2: The Open Source Proposition
http://www.technewsworld.com/rsstory/63202.html
Even as the presidential elections draw ever nearer, debate rages about the technologies used to enable the voting process. It's too late for any large systematic changes to be implemented for this year, said Matthew Zimmerman, senior staff attorney with the Electronic Frontier Foundation. However, what should we use down the road? "Security is only as good as its weakest link," said David Dill, founder of the Verified Voting Foundation. "There is no way you can take an all-electronic machine and make sure it's all trustworthy."

Google Sets Its Sights on Web App Domination
http://www.technewsworld.com/rsstory/63200.html
In a demonstration of its efforts to bridge the chasm between Web-based applications and client, or native, applications, Google announced changes to its Google Earth 3-D mapping software as well as Google Gears Wednesday at its annual I/O software developer's conference in San Francisco. For webmasters, Google launched its new Google Earth Browser Plug-In, which can be embedded within a Web site. The Internet search provider also unveiled a name change, among other things -- from "Google Gears" to simply "Gears" -- for its set of offline software development tools.

Zuckerberg Won't Be Microsoft's Monkey Boy
http://www.technewsworld.com/rsstory/63196.html
Selling Facebook to Microsoft would not be the best way to fulfill its mission of enabling people to connect with one another, said Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of the social network. During the D6: All Things Digital conference in Carlsbad, Calif., Zuckerberg was asked whether he would consider selling if Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer offered $15 billion for the network. That is roughly the price that the entire network would be valued at based on the $240 million Microsoft paid last year for an ownership stake of less than 2 percent.

Google Marches Android Onstage for Show and Tell
http://www.technewsworld.com/rsstory/63198.html
Google reportedly took a moment to show off a prototype mobile phone based on its Android operating system at the Google I/O conference in San Francisco Wednesday. Android is Google's open source, Linux-based mobile phone OS, middleware stack and software development platform. Android has the backing of the Open Handset Alliance, a consortium of hardware, software and telecom companies. If the Open Handset Alliance is the car, Google is essentially the driver.

Scientists Cook Up Nano Noodles
http://www.technewsworld.com/rsstory/63197.html
Japanese scientists say they have used cutting-edge technology to create a noodle bowl so small it can be seen only through a microscope. Mechanical engineering professor Masayuki Nakao said Thursday he and his students at the University of Tokyo used a carbon-based material to produce a noodle bowl with a diameter 1/25,000 of an inch in a project aimed at developing nanotube-processing technology. The Japanese-style ramen bowl was carved out of microscopic nanotubes, Nakao said.

Phoenix Gets Down to Business on Martian Soil
http://www.technewsworld.com/rsstory/63191.html
Scientists began releasing the robotic arm on NASA's new Mars spacecraft on Wednesday, one day late because of a radio problem. The Phoenix lander, which arrived on Mars on Sunday, is in excellent shape, said project manager Barry Goldstein. He said the communications glitch was only a blip in the robot's three-month exploration of the planet's northern arctic region. The outage occurred Tuesday in one of two NASA satellites circling Mars when a radio shut off before it could relay commands to the lander to get the 8-foot arm moving, Goldstein said.

South Africa Bristles at OOXML Standard
http://www.technewsworld.com/rsstory/63190.html
South Africa is appealing a decision to make Microsoft's Office Open XML format an internationally recognized standard for electronic documents, officials said Wednesday. The South African Bureau of Standards sent a letter of protest to two Geneva-based organizations that held a worldwide ballot on Microsoft's application last month, complaining that the process was poorly conducted and rushed. "We challenge the validity of a process that, from beginning to end, required all parties to analyze far too much information in far too little time," SABS Chief Executive Martin Kuscus said.

Is Blu-ray Worth It?
http://www.technewsworld.com/rsstory/63156.html
When HD-DVD maker Toshiba conceded the high-definition DVD format war in February, Blu-ray's backers may have hoped that sales of the Sony-championed format would see a big boost. However, while Blu-ray may have triumphed over HD-DVD, sales for the device have not exactly skyrocketed. An April 30 report from The NPD Group, a U.S. sales tracking firm, found that standalone Blu-ray players sales dropped 40 percent from January to February and grew a minuscule 2 percent from February to March.

Blog-Watching: The Latest Customer Service Craze
http://www.technewsworld.com/rsstory/63184.html
What's the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the words "customer service"? Probably not something suitable for a family newspaper. However, thanks to the immediacy and interactivity of the Internet, things are starting to change. Consider Chad Youngblut, a 27-year-old Web administrator from Mount Dora, Fla. A few months ago, Youngblut was fed up with his Comcast Internet service because he could only get online on one computer at a time. After calls to customer service and visits from technicians he decided to take his frustration out on his blog with a post, "Comcast is the devil."

It Takes Community to Save the Planet
http://www.technewsworld.com/rsstory/63181.html
The power of community is grossly underestimated in this country. Current collaborative trends on the Internet, from Web 2.0 to Wikipedia models, are seen as merely social or arguably informative in nature. That's a bit like saying the U.S. Constitution, another collaborative work, is a fetching flight of fancy thoroughly detached from real world application. Such a claim may be attempted, but it doesn't make a dent in the enduring truth of a multigenerational community commitment. In effect, community works on the Web soar past geographic boundaries and political restraints.

Hear Is a Feast for Hungry Ears
http://www.technewsworld.com/rsstory/63177.html
Last year I wrote a five-star review of an iTunes plug-in called "SRS iWow," saying that it: "magically processes music you play in iTunes so it sounds much better regardless of the speakers or earphones you use. It makes crummy speakers or earphones sound significantly better and makes good speakers or earphones sound fantastic." After I wrote that review I started to wonder why I could only enjoy the SRS iWow magic in iTunes. Why couldn't I experience all of its sound-enhancing goodness in, say, DVD Player, Safari or my favorite games?

Keeping Your Disaster Recovery Plan Well-Oiled
http://www.technewsworld.com/rsstory/63154.html
Companies in the SMB market segment often don't have the expertise or financial resources to formulate and then implement formal business continuity and disaster recovery plans like larger enterprises. In a recent Aberdeen Benchmark Report, Business Continuity: Implementing Disaster Recovery Strategies and Technologies, it was reported that more than 44 percent of companies with 100 to 1,000 employees did not have a BCDR strategy in place. These organizations are truly vulnerable and risking much.

Microsoft Flashes Brief Glimpse of Windows 7
http://www.technewsworld.com/rsstory/63183.html
Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates and CEO Steve Ballmer revealed on Tuesday a few details on the software company's next operating system, Windows 7, at the D: All Things Digital conference in San Diego. The company has maintained a disciplined silence about the upcoming OS -- a marked contrast to the constantly changing plethora of information released during the five years it took Microsoft to develop and launch Windows Vista. During their keynote address, Gates and Ballmer presented a demonstration of the multitouch user interface the software maker plans to add to the OS.

Viacom v. Google Wends Its Way Through Legal Fog
http://www.technewsworld.com/rsstory/63187.html
The patchwork system of digital commerce laws adopted in recent years is showing signs of wear as Viacom's $1 billion suit against Google moves forward. Last year, Viacom filed its complaint in a U.S. District Court, alleging that Google owed it damages for purloined content that had made its way onto the popular video-sharing Web site. By insisting on a content-sharing crackdown, Viacom "threatens the way hundreds of millions of people legitimately exchange information, news, entertainment and political and artistic expression," Google maintains.

The Skinny on Linux for Thin Client Computing

Technology moves at a lightning-fast pace. A brand new desktop computer has an average lifespan of two to five years, after which both its hardware and its software have become obsolete. For businesses and other organizations, this poses a significant challenge as they attempt to keep their IT purchasing budgets down while simultaneously trying to keep their infrastructures up to date. Enter the thin client -- either a repurposed desktop computer or a brand-new terminal device.

The software giant could sell as many as 20 million copies of Windows Mobile during the soon-to-end fiscal year, almost double the 11 million it shipped last year, Eddie Wu, Microsoft's managing director of OEM embedded devices in Asia, reportedly said. The optimistic outlook for Windows Mobile comes just days after Microsoft promised to make major advances in mobile advertising.

Microsoft is abandoning its effort to scan whole libraries and make their contents searchable, a sign it may be getting choosier about the fights it will pick with Google. The world's largest software maker is under pressure to show it has a coherent strategy for turning around its unprofitable online business after its bid for Yahoo, last valued at $47.5 billion, collapsed this month. Digitizing books no longer fits with the company's plan for its search operation, wrote Satya Nadella, senior vice president of Microsoft's search and advertising group, in a blog post Friday.

What Do EMC and Apple Have in Common? Quality

OK, this may seem like a huge stretch because I doubt there are any tech companies more different than EMC and Apple. However, I just spent several days at EMC World and I actually found one similarity: Both companies are focused like lasers on customer loyalty. This goes beyond customer satisfaction and speaks to a process that ties their respective customer to the firm like magnets. Given both companies have dramatically different customers and therefore have dramatically different approaches, I thought it would be interesting to contrast them.

Bye Bye, WiFi? Local Governments Abandoning Network Plans
http://www.technewsworld.com/rsstory/63099.html
Dreams of highly subsidized municipal wireless Internet access aren't dead, but a string of failed initiatives is forcing local governments to rethink the scale and cost of rolling out WiFi access to their residents. Several years ago, government officials and executives from private companies hailed municipal WiFi as a solution for improved public safety infrastructure, cheaper broadband service and access for areas with slow or no Internet access. The assumption was that private service providers could set up networks with minimal financial burden on governments.

Dating and the Social Networker: Too Much Information?

Oliver Pangborn hates Dave Matthews Band. If you looooove Dave Matthews Band, Pangborn probably doesn't want to date you. If you share his loathing, eh, drop him a line. Gone are the days when it took a date, maybe two, to find out a person's resume of likes and dislikes -- favorite movie, favorite quotes, special causes. Online matchmaking sites rendered that notion quaint years ago, and now social networking sites are doing their part to obliterate it. "Facebook and MySpace are kind of robbing the mysteries out of dating," said Pangborn, 30, who lives in Chicago's Gold Coast neighborhood.

Still, Netflix has scored a coup with the launch of its $99 Netflix Player by Roku, a set-top box meant to do battle with Apple TV for dominance atop your TV set. And let me take a minute to propose a new term to replace "set-top box," since you really can't put anything on top of most television sets these days. But I digress.

Hunting Botnets With Randal Vaughn

You might call Randal Vaughn the Botnet Slayer. After all, he spends much of his time researching the intricacies of cyber-crime carried out through malware marauders perpetrating their evil deeds with robotized computers around the globe. When Vaughn is not peering through sinuous Internet traffic reports looking for botnet trails, he is lecturing to his students at Baylor University, where he is a popular management information systems professor. Think of him as a sort of Indiana Jones of cyber-crime.

Mac Bloggers Watch Netflix and Napster Rock Apple's Boat
http://www.technewsworld.com/rsstory/63125.html
Apple is sailing in the calm eye of the hurricane these days, cruising serenely with rapidly rising Mac, iPhone and iTunes sales. This week in the Apple-focused blogosphere, however, Mac bloggers are showing how Apple can sometimes have smooth water on one side of the Cupertino boat and nasty waves on the other. First, the rough stuff. Mail-order DVD rental powerhouse Netflix announced a new streaming media set-top television box that competes with Apple TV and Apple's iTunes business model.

Voting 2.0, Part 1: The Trouble With Closed Systems
http://www.technewsworld.com/rsstory/63106.html
As the 2008 elections approach, political mudslinging on the campaign trail has become an all-too-familiar sight. No less muddy, however -- and no less central to the democratic process -- is the battle that's currently being waged over the ballot box. How Americans cast their votes has become a subject of hot debate ever since the Florida debacle in the 2000 presidential election. Controversy has fired up afresh each time new analyses are released, such as those in recent months from Princeton University's Ed Felten.

Netflix Player: Small Box, Small Price, Big Value
http://www.technewsworld.com/rsstory/63132.html
It's the big horse race in the gadget market this year: Who's going to win consumers' hearts with a box that brings Internet movie downloads to the TV set? Now, we have a tiny box that deserves to be a winner. Roku, a small maker of Internet-connected media devices, this week introduced a black box that grabs movies and TV shows from Netflix, the DVD rental-by-mail pioneer. You attach the Netflix Player to your TV and connect it to your home broadband connection over WiFi or a cable. Pick a movie using the included remote, wait a minute for the download to start, and then watch on your TV.

http://www.technewsworld.com/rsstory/63131.html
In a wide-ranging talk on communications and the Internet, Google cofounder Larry Page said Thursday that his company and Yahoo could structure a long-term advertising deal that does not raise antitrust concerns and protects Yahoo's autonomy. Page was also explicit about why Google opposes any deal between Microsoft and Yahoo, saying it would curb innovation in areas such as instant messaging and create a near-monopoly in communications.

B2B in a Web 2.0 World, Part 3: TV Media Relations
http://www.technewsworld.com/rsstory/63095.html
Broadcast, cablecast, simulcast, webcast, podcast, vodcast, mobilecast -- the melding of the realms of "lean back" and "lean in" technology can mean coming attractions for business-to-business marketing communications and video news generation -- if done straight-up, i.e., correctly and transparently. Narrowcast B2B Web video programming has completely changed the old TV newsroom paradigm, and in doing so has affected the role of the Web as a business news forum along with the way that companies relate to online media in telling their stories and selling their products and services.

Security Firm to Apple: Ready or Not, Here's That Exploit
http://www.technewsworld.com/rsstory/63129.html
Core Security has published three Mac OS X iCal-based vulnerabilities -- two that can crash the iCal program and one that could conceivably allow a hacker to take control of another person's computer. The newly publicized exploits have gained attention recently in part because of the way in which they've been presented. Core Security, perhaps attempting to spur Apple into action, posted the flaws on the Web for all to see after attempting to work with Apple for several months to work out a patch. The severity of the flaws is somewhat debatable, yet they certainly exist.

"The announcement is pretty significant because data in companies of all sizes is growing unabated," said Lauren Whitehouse, an analyst at Enterprise Strategy Group.

http://www.technewsworld.com/rsstory/62820.html
It's official: In New York City public schools there is now a ban on cell phone use. We can all understand how that might happen. As with any communication device, abuse does occur. But simultaneously, there is a wave of interest in education in 1:1 learning initiatives, meaning that educators believe in the learning benefits of one laptop for each student. Does this leave the technology world scratching its head?

'Mario Kart Wii' a Disappointing Ride
http://www.technewsworld.com/rsstory/62867.html
I may finally be feeling some Wii fatigue. The Wii, Nintendo's super-popular and notably innovative game console, is far from perfect -- but it's also easily forgiven when the flaws are weighed against the extraordinary fun it offers. That has been my attitude until now, anyway. It's the recent release of "Mario Kart Wii" that is giving me pause.

Robotic Wildlife Aid Study of Real-Life Critters
http://www.technewsworld.com/rsstory/62870.html
One gray squirrel, its bushy tail twitching, barked a warning as another scrounged for food nearby. It was an ordinary spring day, except that the rodent issuing the warning was powered by amps, not acorns. Dubbed "Rocky" after the cartoon character, the robo-squirrel was working its way into a live-squirrel clique, controlled by researchers with a laptop computer and binoculars.

http://www.technewsworld.com/rsstory/62814.html

Most e-commerce sites are approaching their 10th birthday. The standard approach -- with left-hand navigation and search, a product catalog and product detail, cart and checkout -- is a tired format. Just like brick-and-mortar stores, Web stores need refurbishing, and retail is the new darling of Web innovation.

Ready for the Robot Revolution
http://www.technewsworld.com/rsstory/62856.html
Despite some impressive showings in robotics lately, the accolades are slow to come from industry outsiders. We, the general public, watch Honda's Asimo slowly make its way down a few steps, for example, and unfairly compare it to the glib and golden C-3PO of science fiction, and thus blind ourselves to the miracle before us.

Retain IT Talent by Instilling a Sense of Ownership
http://www.technewsworld.com/rsstory/62798.html
How can smaller employers contend in today's competitive hiring market? By offering employees what large organizations often can't: a say in how the business is run and the freedom to explore and take risks. The key is getting employees invested in the organization's success at a deep level -- creating a sense of ownership that isn't quickly forfeited when other offers come. This message couldn't be timelier.

MozyHome Opens the Door for Online Mac Backups
http://www.technewsworld.com/rsstory/62826.html
While Apple's Time Machine and Time Capsule present a made-for-Mac backup solution designed and built by the company itself, it lacks one critical feature -- offsite backups. If a home is robbed, flooded or, worse yet, burned, some of a computer's most precious data can be lost with it. While the family budget is important enough, the real gold is family photos and movies that can never be recreated.

Russia's Black Market Flush With iPhones
http://www.technewsworld.com/rsstory/62830.html
Status symbols in Russia never stay the same for very long. During the Soviet era, the holy grail was a pair of blue jeans. When runaway capitalism took hold in the post-Soviet 1990s, a BMW served as ample proof to fellow Muscovites that you had rocketed out of the days of government-decreed uniformity like a cosmonaut.

It is unusual, but not unheard of, for a murder case to go forward if a body has not been found. Those were the exact circumstances, though, under which Hans Reiser was convicted Tuesday of the murder of his estranged wife, Nina.
