Digital Trends - In what might prove to be a very significant ruling in the patent wars surrounding mobile technology, the Karlsruhe Higher Regional Court in Germany has ruled Motorola Mobility cannot enforce its patents included in technology standards in Germany so long as an appeals process is underway. The original injunction was granted back in December, and earlier this month, Apple was forced to briefly stop offering some iPhone and iPad devices for sale in Germany as a result. However, the higher court has now ruled that Motorola cannot block sales of Apple devices (including the iPhone and iPad) employing 3G technology patented by Motorola, but which are supposed to be licensed to any party on FRAND (fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory) terms.

Japanese memory maker Elpida files for bankruptcy
(Digital Trends)
http://news.yahoo.com/s/digitaltrends/20120227/tc_digitaltrends/japanesememorymakerelpidafilesforbankruptcy
Digital Trends - Japanese memory maker Elpida has filed for bankruptcy protection, citing debts of some Â¥448 billion (about $5.55 billion), making it the biggest bankruptcy filing in Japanese history. Elpida is Japanâs last remaining manufacturer of DRAM, the memory that fuels everything from servers to desktop and notebook computers to smartphones and mobile devices. However, the company has struggled as the price of DRAM has steadily dropped to due competition from the likes of South Koreaâs Samsung and Hynix, and the strong Japanese yen has both kept Elpidaâs prices high and increased the cost of Elpidaâs operations across the board. Although Elpida is still making RAM for the time being, the filing raises concerns that Japan may soon find itself out of the DRAM business it once dominated.

First spotted by ZDNetâs Stephen Chapman, the documents have since been pulled from HPâs site, but seemed to indicate Microsoft may be ditching the little-loved âBasicâ editions of Windows in favor of three tracks aimed at consumers, enterprise users, and high-end professionals:

Mythbuster: Why unlimited data throttling may be pointless
(Digital Trends)
http://news.yahoo.com/s/digitaltrends/20120224/tc_digitaltrends/mythbusterwhyunlimiteddatathrottlingmaybepointless
Digital Trends - Well this is interesting: New research by Validas, a company that analyzes wireless phone bills, found that there is barely any difference in the data usage habits of the top 5 percent of tiered and unlimited wireless users. This comes after three of the four major US wireless carriers have begun to throttle speeds for those so-called âdata hogsâ on unlimited plans. What the findings potentially uncover is that the new policies are ostensibly less about the initial justifications for the limits â esoteric concerns over network bandwidth and wireless spectrum shortage, of which AT&T specifically referred to as an impetus for their policy shift â and more about moving legacy unlimited data plan holders to more modern, tiered contracts.

T-Mobile LTE: How is that going to work?
(Digital Trends)
http://news.yahoo.com/s/digitaltrends/20120223/tc_digitaltrends/tmobileltehowisthatgoingtowork
Digital Trends - Number four U.S. mobile carrier T-Mobile is attempting to shake off the dust of the abandoned takeover effort from AT&T, announcing a revamped âChallenger Strategyâ that is intended to make the carrier more competitive against the likes of Sprint, AT&T, and the top U.S. mobile operator, Verizon Wireless. Of course, being competitive in the mobile market these days means moving towards 4G LTE technology â and thatâs exactly what T-Mobile says itâs going to do, announcing plans to begin deploying LTE services in 2013. Furthermore, T-Mobile is going to re-jigger its network, drastically cutting back services for its 2G/EDGE customers in order to boost its HSPA+ high-speed broadband offerings â and, in so doing, make its network more interoperable with AT&T. That, in turn, could pave the way toward T-Mobile eventually being able to offer Appleâs iPhone.

Digital Trends - In a rare fit of bipartisanship, the U.S. Congress has passed a deal that would extend payroll tax breaks and unemployment insurance to millions of Americans. From the technology standpoint, the news isnât the extension of government benefits or the fact two gridlocked parties managed to get something done: Itâs how the legislation would pay for those benefits. The U.S. government plans to auction off some wireless spectrum currently held by television broadcasters to the wireless industry, for a payday worth an estimated $25 billion. The deal promises to help alleviate the spectrum crunch experienced by mobile operators â meaning, beneficiaries of the auction would be able to offer more mobile broadband to more people. Along the way, the legislation also carves off the so-called âD blockâ of 700MHz spectrum exclusively for use by police, fire, medical, and emergency responders.

Digital Trends - According to a recent post at MacRumors, members of the Apple rumor blog obtained the iPad 3 screen as a separate manufacturing part and examined the display underneath a microscope. Identical in size to the 9.7-inch iPad 1 and iPad 2 displays, MacRumors found that the display pixels are one quarter the size of the pixels on the iPad 2. For instance, a cluster of  eight pixels on the iPad 2 would contain 32 pixels on the iPad 3 in the same measured area. Starting with the iPad 2 native resolution of 1024 by 768 and multiplying the total pixels by a factor of four, the next display for the upcoming iPad will have a 2048 by 1536 resolution and offer double the sharpness of the first two iPads. As the $12.5 billion Google-Motorola deal gained approval from the U.S. just hours after the European Union granted clearance, it’s becoming harder to believe the acquisition will have little impact on Android. But this is really a win for Google, its Android OS and Motorola. From a device and software standpoint, it’s high time Google admits the need for an independent hardware channel. Your company basically invented the tablet 10 years ago, but didnât have the chutzpah to take it mainstream, and now Apple has built the most valuable company in the world on the popularity of mobile devices. Youâre still essentially minting money, Windows 8 is just over the horizon, but a voice in the back of your head is nagging that something needs to change. Found in this position, you might direct all your companyâs resources toward innovation, to creating fascinating new products the world canât live without. Or, you could just start building Microsoft retail stores directly across the mall from Apple Stores. As Ballmer told Business Week recently, âWell, the traffic is going to be there, and weâve got to beat them anyway.â

Apple's patent plea: Stop Samsung and Motorola from holding us hostage
(Digital Trends)
http://news.yahoo.com/s/digitaltrends/20120209/tc_digitaltrends/applespatentpleastopsamsungandmotorolafromholdingushostage
Digital Trends - The world of patent licensing often seems like a maze of twisty little passages, all alike, but every so often the industry stumbles into a new tunnel â or, at least, one that seems new at first glance. Such is the case with Apple, which has asked the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) to establish a set of basic principles governing so-called fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory (FRAND) licensing of patented technologies included in wireless communications standards. That sentence may make many consumersâ eyes glaze over, but it boils down to this: Apple wants rules saying that if a company contributes their technology to a standard, they donât get to use that technology to beat up competitors who use that standard.

Pay for play: Are marketers manipulating Apple's App Store rankings?
(Digital Trends)
http://news.yahoo.com/s/digitaltrends/20120208/tc_digitaltrends/payforplayaremarketersmanipulatingapplesappstorerankings
Digital Trends - With over 500,000 apps available through Appleâs App Store, it can be daunting for developers to get their apps noticed â let alone downloaded. Enter a recent thread on app developer site Touch Arcade, in which a poster who was recently shopping around for ways to get his app more exposure was contacted by a âmarketingâ company that promised it could break apps into the top 25 rankings in exchange for a lump sum payment â in this case $5,000. The company in question went on to present a list of client apps that are currently sitting pretty on the list of 20 most popular free iPhone apps (8 out of 20 to be exact). Thatâs rarified air even for big-name developers. According to the poster, the company achieves its ends by utilizing outsourced bot farms to automatically download client apps (something the company freely admitted), thus moving them quickly up the rankings, at which point âhumanâ users notice them and really get the numbers up.

The Motley Fool - In this period of "exceptional uncertainty" (to quote Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke), where can investors turn for a considered perspective on the current environment? Produced to feed the beast of the 24-hour news cycle, the bulk of financial journalism and commentary today isn't worth the servers it is stored on. One notable exception to that rule is Buttonwood, the financial markets column of The Economist. Philip Coggan is the columnist -- arguably the most influential position in financial journalism (along with the head of Lex at the Financial Times).

There won't be a new Xbox or PlayStation announcement this year. And that is a good thing.
(Digital Trends)
http://news.yahoo.com/s/digitaltrends/20120131/tc_digitaltrends/therewontbeanewxboxorplaystationannouncementthisyearandthatisagoodthing
Digital Trends - Letâs be honest. If you ignore all the news, pretend all the hype is imagined, and search your feelings: is anyone really excited for the next Xbox or the PS4 yet? If this was an actual discussion and, ya know, not a written column, the answer would likely be a resounding no. That doesnât mean people arenât interested in the next generation of consoles and wonât buy them with the glee that only a hardcore gamer can experience, but are people really prepared to abandon the current generation to shell out hundreds of dollars on a new system, just because?

Megaupload users: EFF wants to help you recover lost files
(Digital Trends)
http://news.yahoo.com/s/digitaltrends/20120131/tc_digitaltrends/megauploaduserseffwantstohelpyourecoverlostfiles
Digital Trends - As of Monday, it seemed all but guaranteed that the files stored on the servers used by Megaupload, which was seized by the US government on January 19, were gone for good. This includes the data of people who used Megaupload for legitimate purposes, like distributing work documents, or their own photo and video creations. But thanks to a collaborative effort between the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) and Carpathia Hosting, which owns and operates many of the servers used by Mega in the US, users who lost their files may now have a way to get them back.
